Global Regulatory Affairs Intern

May - August 2018 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

My location had an open and welcoming atmosphere. Everyone I talked to was open to answering my questions, and many people who weren't connected to my group or projects were happy to meet with me for informational interviews. The company really seems to value its employees.

What I wish was different

Interns in more traditional engineering roles (manufacturing, PD, etc.) seemed to be invited to more tours and had more learning opportunities. It would be cool for other interns to be involved in those as well (although it was easy enough to schedule them on my own).

Advice

Ask questions and get to know the people around you!

Marketing Intern

June - September 2018 • Valencia, CA

What I liked

The culture at Boston Scientific was incredible. I worked with wonderful people in the Neuromodulation division. Additionally, I had an immense amount of autonomy in my project while still being able to ask for feedback as needed.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a group intern project throughout the summer as well. We did a few fun activities, but I think this would be a great way to source ideas from many different functions.

Advice

Meet with as many people as you can in all departments/functions, and present your work to as many people as you can at the end (that it would be useful for them to hear).

Marketing Intern

July - August 2019 • Tokyo, Tokyo Prefecture

What I liked

It was a great internship program. It has taught me a lot about how marketing is like in the scientific, health care industry, and gave me a lot of network and connections

What I wish was different

I wish the program would have been offered longer.

Advice

Seek for every single connection and network you have and utilize them fully!

R&D Intern

May - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

Friendly and supportive coworkers, good work culture, plenty of opportunities to relax or have fun as a break at work, not overly strict on anything, will assist you in getting on different projects that you like more

What I wish was different

I wish that I had communicated sooner that I would like to do different projects to gain more relevant experience, because I definitely could have been doing that sooner. It would have been nice to have more of the company and their products explained to me, and to have seen different engineers working in different departments

Advice

Network and reach out to as many people the second you start an internship. Everyone here wants to see you grow and succeed, it's only a matter of taking the first step and helping yourself. They do amazing work here and it's a gold mine for anyone wanting to gain knowledge/insight/experience in the biomedical field

Clinical Operations Intern

June - August 2021 • Minnetonka, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment at BSC. Everyone was super supportive and wanted to ensure that you got the most out of your intern experience.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID, there was limited in-person interaction (which was expected) but I wish the circumstance could have been different in that regard. Building a network and developing relationships is easier to do when you are face-to-face.

Advice

I would say to just fully embrace the unknown. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask question. Build a network outside of just your department. Remember that at the end of the day this experience is meant to challenge you but also help to determine what it is you want to do in the future (and it is okay to realize that you might want to switch directions)!

Global Recruitment Marketing Intern

June - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

The people are phenomenal! Everyone was so welcoming and excited to connect, and I was impressed by the commitment to diversity equity and inclusion. My manager worked so hard to make the experience unforgettable (and it was!) I had the flexibility to create a customized summer project that leveraged my skillset and targeted some skills I wanted to improve on. I really felt like part of the team this summer.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure and opportunities to meet people. Because of the remote setup, it was very independent at times. While everyone was friendly and willing to set time aside to chat, it was hard to connect with other interns and make friends through the program.

Advice

Become involved outside your role/team! Join Employee Resource Groups, attend intern information sessions, and set aside time to meet people while you're still an intern. If there are any other areas you're interested in, find out who to talk to and make those connections.

Finance Intern (Corporate Accounting)

May - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

The best part about being an intern at BSC has been the people. From intern, to associate, to management, everybody I spoke with over the course of the summer was interested in learning about me and invested in providing me the resources to be successful during and after my internship. The workload was manageable, and I never felt intimidated when asking questions about my work or the company. For finance interns, weekly meet ups were scheduled to meet with management across the company, ranging from divisional controllers to the CFO. While remote work and networking can be challenging, I genuinely felt that everybody I met at the company cared and were willing to put in the effort to make this an enjoyable experience for me and for the other interns.

What I wish was different

While there were opportunities to meet with employees from a range of positions and departments/divisions, I did not feel like I had too much opportunity to learn about the business itself and the roles available across different areas of finance. I think it'd be helpful to have more formal opportunities to learn about specific divisions/departments. Being remote definitely can be a bit isolating at times, but I'd expect in the future opportunities will have an in-person component as they did in the past.

Advice

Ask questions, be curious, and network with employees in different areas of the business. Whether you love the work you are doing or not, there is a lot to learn from any task/individual if you have the right mindset. Just be open minded to new challenges, work hard, and be flexible.

Design Assurance Intern

May - August 2021 • Maple Grove, MN

What I liked

Boston Scientific is a wonderful place to work, especially as your first internship! Everyone you meet is so nice, helpful, and encouraging to help you grow personally, professionally, and educationally. It is a huge company, so there are many opportunities to network and move around, trying different roles and departments to find your home. There are a variety of ways to get involved outside of your project, such as joining an Employee Resource Group or volunteering around the Twin Cities, but the projects are also incredible. It's so heartwarming to know that what you do will make a difference and change people's lives.

What I wish was different

I know that this is due to covid, but I wish there had been more ways for me to interact with interns at other sites and departments. Despite being a hybrid intern, I got to know quite a few engineers at the Maple Grove site, but I wish I had the chance to meet interns in California and Marlborough through online events. There were many online events, but they were more centered on listening to a speaker than interacting with one another.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask to get involved! If you want to be involved with more deliverables or have an opportunity with a new aspect of your project, ask your manager or supervisor about it. If you are overworked or underworked, let your team know. Frequently check in with your team to know what you're doing well on and what you can improve upon. You don't need to wait for feedback.

Medical Device Builder

May - August 2021 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

Friendly coworkers, paid overtime, helpful department.

What I wish was different

I made more money as a temp employee than some of the full time workers because Boston was slow to update their pay raise. I would be quite frustrated if I was on the other end of this experience.

Advice

Many helpful learning opportunities, take advantage of your resources and learn about as many processes as you can, don't settle in to the same few roles.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

Working in person and getting helpful feedback from higher ups. Also, exploring the city and networking with other interns.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more technical experience and more time to speak with my mentor about my internship goals. I also wish there were more in person events on the Arden Hills campus.

Advice

Speak up whenever you have questions or concerns about your position or BSC as a whole.

Design Assurance Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the company culture! Everyone was so kind and helpful, always willing to give you advice and help you out. The projects were interesting, and it was so inspiring to be working on projects that you knew were going to help people. I loved the internship events that were offered, and the intern housing was awesome!

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more opportunities to network with interns at other sites as well as in other departments, specifically interns that weren't engineers.

Advice

Network through 1:1 meetings with people from other departments to learn more about what you may want to go into, communication is key!
