Police Officer

The Houston Police Department is hiring qualified police officer candidates for our upcoming academy classes. As the fifth largest agency in the nation, HPD sets the bar for professionalism, innovation and a progressive approach to relational policing. Officers receive a competitive salary with regular salary increases, city-subsidized insurance, 11 paid holidays with an additional 35-40 paid days off per year, tuition reimbursement, as well as retirement plans and a pension plan with early retirement options. No prior law enforcement experience required. Upon employment, you will attend our 6 month paid police academy and obtain your peace officer’s license. You will receive specialized training from some of the finest officers in law enforcement. For those who have full-time experience as a licensed peace officer, your salary may be based on your years of law enforcement experience up to five years.

HPD BASE SALARIES
Cadet/Probationary Officer ($42,000)
Police Officer ($53,721 - $70,841)
Sr. Police Officer ($72,129 - $78,979)
Police Sergeant ($86,621 - $91,047))
Police Lieutenant ($96,446 - $102,041)
Police Commander ($111,120 - $120,454)
In addition to the base pay, you may be eligible to receive various incentive pays.
YEARLY INCENTIVE PAY
Education Pay* - Bachelor’s Degree ($3,640), Master’s Degree ($6,240), Doctorate Degree ($8,840)
Equipment Allowance** - ($2,000)
Shift Differential Pay** - ($1,800)
Weekend Pay – 2 Days** - ($1,800)
Weekend Pay – 1 Day** - ($900)
Training Pay** - ($1,400)
Bilingual Pay*** - ($1,800)
*Paid bi-weekly after graduation from the academy.
**Paid bi-weekly after probationary period.
**Must pass language test after probationary period ends. Paid bi-weekly after probationary period.

QUALIFICATIONS
You must have at least one of the following four qualifications:
 1.   At least 48 semester hours of credit in any area of study from an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 grade point average; OR
2.   A minimum of 18 months active duty in the United States armed forces and received an honorable discharge; OR
3.   At least 3 years of full-time employment as a peace officer licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or an equivalent licensing entity in another state; OR
4.   At least 36 months of full-time employment in the last 48 months.
 Additionally, you:
  • Must be between the ages of 20.5 - 44 years of age (applicants must be 21 prior to graduating the academy and must not turn 45 prior to graduating the academy).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
