Bioinformatics Web Developer (TSA2005.20)

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Bioinformatics Web Developer position to support research and development in the Genetic Medicine Program at the newly established research center Palo Alto Epidemiology Research and Information Center for Genomics at the VA hospital.
Our highly dedicated bioinformatics team works with petabytes of genomic data, in on-premise HPC and public cloud platforms. Along with high profile academicians and industry leaders, we transform big data genomics practices and translate bioinformatics research to facilitate precision health and medicine.
The ideal person for this position is a skilled developer who is passionate about improving health care. They will use cutting-edge technologies to develop tools, pipelines, and platforms to support the center's goal of analyzing and interpreting large and high-quality human genetic data. The successful candidate will have deep knowledge of scientific software development, experience with massive scale data analysis, and a strong grasp in high performance computing and cloud technologies. 
This is a full-time, Exempt (Salary-paid) position. Location: Palo Alto, CA.

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.
Duties:
  • Develop web portal(s) to facilitate data access, sharing, and cloud-based computational workflow
  • Create and manage APIs to enable programmatic control over data & workflow operations
  • Integrate existing and novel solutions to visualize, sort and filter data
  • Use metadata dictionaries and ontologies to define data models that encourage data sharing and reuse.
Requirements:
Education:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science, computational physics/biology, bioinformatics, genetics, or a related field;
  • Desired: Master's degree in computer science, computational physics/biology, bioinformatics, genetics, or a related field.
Work Experience:
Required:
  • At least one year of related experience and a Bachelor's degree or 2+ years of experience in software development of frontend and backend web technologies. An advanced degree or post-doctoral experience will be considered in lieu of above-mentioned work experience;
  • Experience using popular Javascript frameworks (e.g. React, Angular) to develop web applications;
  • Experience in at least one or more relevant programming language (Python, R, Java, C++, Perl, etc.);
  • Experience in API development (e.g. REST, GraphQL);
  • Experience using one or more of: SQL, NoSQL, or graph databases.
Desired: Experience working in a cloud environment (e.g. GCP, AWS, etc.) and semantic web technologies.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Proficient in Python or Java;
  • Expertise in API development (e.g. REST, GraphOL);
  • Expertise using one or more of: SQL, NoSQL, or graph databases;
  • Ability to comply with VA rules and regulations;
  • Knowledge of techniques to manage user access control and ensure data security, desired;
  • Knowledge of biomedical ontologies, desired;
  • Knowledge of general principles for regulatory compliance, desired;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to deliver excellent results while working independently and being a team player.
Physical Demands: Sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time, repetitive movement, etc.
Environmental Conditions: Office environment.
