Graduate Research Assistant

M.S. Research Assistantships Available in the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment at East Carolina University


The graduate program in the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment at East Carolina University (Greenville, North Carolina) prepares students for a wide range of careers in the environmental sciences, sustainable development, geospatial technologies and urban and regional planning. Specific areas of emphasis within our program include atmospheric science, coastal geomorphology, geographic information science (GIS), community planning, health and medical geography, rural development, environmental science, and climate change. Successful candidates will join an active and collegial community in which they will work closely with faculty to develop a program that is tailored to their interests.

We are pleased to announce the following M.S. Research Assistantships available in our graduate program.

  1. M.S. RA position #1 starting in January 2021: We welcome students interested in social science research related to weather forecasts. This project is funded by the National Weather Service and is centered on the Winter Storm Severity Index. Specifically, the focus is on “Improving Storm Readiness through Severity and Social Impact Forecasting.” Two years of funding is available. Please contact Dr. Burrell Montz (montzb@ecu.edu) for more information about the project.
  2. M.S. RA position #2 starting in January or August 2021: A prospective student will work on multiple GIS projects that examine exposure to air pollution and environmental health disparities. Students with research interests in GIS, geospatial analysis/visualization, environmental health, health disparities, environmental justice, and/or citizen science are encouraged to apply.   3. M.S. RA position #3 starting in January or August 2021: The student will examine issues of water governance, management, and policy in North Carolina and beyond. Students may participate in projects involving transboundary water cooperation and decision-making at multiple scales, transboundary water politics, flood management and governance after extreme events (such as floods) and the food-water-energy-climate nexus. Students with backgrounds in social sciences (including Geography, Political Science, and others) and GIS analysis are encouraged to apply.
