Columbus Roadway Engineer I

Job Title: Roadway Engineer I

Position Purpose: As a team member you will be working on the production of roadway construction documents for our transportation clients. You will be generating and/or reviewing standard detailed drawings using CAD, design software, and engineering principles for specific portions of construction, maintenance, and planning of transportation projects throughout the State of Ohio. You will work both individually and as part of a team to assist in the coordination and preparation of roadway construction documents and details. This role requires basic CAD skills. You may coordinate with team members in other transportation disciplines to work on various transportation projects for clients. In this position, you directly report to a Roadway Project Manager but may receive daily task direction from a roadway engineer for specific projects.

Travel, Environment, and Typical Physical Activities: Our team members perform work in an open workstation environment utilizing a personal computer and various communication tools to perform tasks and coordinate with internal and external contacts. The position requires working with CAD and/or other software on a computer for 90% of the time designing detailed roadway plans and maintenance of traffic schemes, as well as designing signing and pavement markings. The candidate should have a desire to attend trainings and professional meetings to keep informed on new design criteria and policies. The position may require occasional travel to project site locations or to various client offices. Field sites range from undeveloped forest and farmland to four-lane interstates. Site visits will occur in all seasons of the year, cold and wet weather included. Work may include walking the project to verify field surveys, searching for drainage structures, taking photos of the sites, and performing traffic counts. Work-related travel could be in a personal vehicle, unless a company vehicle is available. Attendance at evening public involvement, council, and/or planning and zoning meetings may be necessary.

Key Skills, Competencies, Experience, and Certifications Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • 0-2 years of work experience in roadway engineering
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft’s Office suite of programs
  • Ability to follow instruction from team members and managers
  • Ability to multi-task while meeting specified timelines
  • Valid State driver’s license and appropriate insurance
  • Availability to work overtime and weekends when necessary

Key Skills, Competencies, Experience, and Certifications Preferred:
  • EI certificate
  • MicroStation and/or OpenRoads Designer experience
  • AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of roadway engineering principles and practices relating to roadway geometry, grading/earthwork, hydrology/hydraulics, soils, surveying, pavement design
