International Role: Literacy Specialist
Are you a life-long learner? Do you listen to people and read them well? Do you have the ability to motivate, learn languages, be creative, solve problems, and teach truths?
Literacy is more than simply teaching people how to read; it opens a new way of living. It provides a path to Scripture for people who otherwise would not have access.
Literacy Specialists focus on developing programs in languages where there is a translation project in progress and emphasize using the mother tongue as the gateway to basic literacy. Literacy specialists may develop alphabets, will facilitate development of reading materials, and will equip mother-tongue literacy teachers. Our vision for language programs is to see literacy become a sustainable community value with the ownership of literacy goals and activities in the hands of the people.
