Program Coordinator or Aquatics Program Coordinator

Job Summary:
The two Program Coordinators are the leaders of the day-to-day flow and logistics of camp activities. They ensure that the programs and activities at camp are high quality, consistent, fun, safe, and appropriately challenging & engaging for all by training, leading, and evaluating other staff, assisting in the creation and evaluation of activity plans, and creating and facilitating fun and impactful special events and activities. This is a full-time, live-on-site, summer seasonal position with a pay rate of $350/week and room and board provided. All majors are accepted provided required qualifications are met. This position is available as an internship by request.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in all pre-camp supervisor and general staff training
  • Provide active ongoing observation, support, coaching, mentoring, feedback, and training to counselors and other activity leaders to ensure all activities are safe, intentional/planful, meet program quality standards, and result in positive, fun, safe, inclusive, and equitable camper outcomes and experiences, with a focus on assigned specialty areas of camp (such as the challenge course, archery, mountain biking, hiking, drama/theater, sports, aquatics, art, and/or leadership development). Conduct pre-season and ongoing skills verifications with staff leading activities in specific areas.
  • This may include formally supervising a small group of activity leader staff, ensuring they are meeting expectations of their position including providing coaching, mentoring, feedback, evaluation, and disciplinary action (as appropriate).
  • In close coordination with Unit Heads, responsible for the creation, coordination, and dissemination of the daily camp activity schedule, along with any updates and/or changes as needed. Ensure appropriate trained/certified staff coverage is present for all specialized activities.
  • Lead the creation and facilitation of special events and activities, such as evening programs and all-camp themed games
  • Assist in program evaluation and ongoing activity plan/curriculum development/improvement
  • Ensure all necessary ongoing paperwork, upkeep, inspections, and organization related to the program area(s) supervised is completed regularly, and areas are maintained in safe and tidy condition with all needed supplies available for each group.
  • Work together with facilities staff to ensure assigned activity areas and equipment are safe and regularly inspected/maintained, including ensuring any related required documentation is completed.
  • Work as part of overall summer leadership team, including planning and leading camp-wide activities and events, participating in leadership team and staff meetings, collaboratively and productively problem solving to address camper or staff issues that arise, and supporting logistics of camp life such as participant arrival and check-in, staff time-off coordination, staff appreciation, and ongoing all-staff training
  • Implement and enforce all One Heartland staff and facility policies and procedures as well as all health and industry regulations such as state of Minnesota and ACA (American Camp Association) standards
  • Conduct themself in a professional and friendly manner to ensure positive relations with participants, families, community, volunteers, visitors, and staff
  • Stewardship & conservation: Always takes care to use program, facility, and natural resources wisely
  • Other duties as assigned/Support other team members and projects as needed
 
Required Qualifications and Traits:
  • Experience with youth between the ages of 7 and 17
  • Prior experience planning and facilitating activities with youth
  • Connection to or knowledgeable about one or more of the populations we serve (LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS, currently or formerly unhoused) and most importantly a commitment to respectfully work with, and honor the identities or experiences of, our participants from all of these populations. 
  • Commitment to active inclusion and making sure everyone feels welcome, included, and celebrated
  • Highly organized, logistically minded, creative, participant-focused, and safety-conscious
  • Strong interpersonal communication/relational skills, particularly as related to the ability to effectively teach, direct, supervise, coach, and support other staff
  • Experience in some of the following camp program areas: High/Low Ropes Courses & Climbing Wall, Archery/Slingshot, Visual and Performing Arts, general outdoor skills/nature, teen leadership development, bicycling, swimming, canoeing, fishing
  • Current Archery and Challenge Course/Belay certification OR Lifeguard certification (available prior to staff training)
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (certification available during staff training)
  • Ability to direct a team, including to carry out emergency response at all activity areas
  • Aquatics Programs Supervisor: Prior experience as a lifeguard
 
Helpful Qualifications and Traits:
  • Experience working in a residential youth summer camp setting
  • Experience leading one or more of the specialty camp activities
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role
  • Aquatics Programs Supervisor: Lifeguard Instructor, Lifeguard Management, and/or Water Safety Instructor certifications

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to tolerate prolonged work hours
  • Frequently exposed to crowds and high noise levels
  • Must be able to move about camp indoors and out and work in outdoor weather conditions
  •  Able to demonstrate and participate in assigned camp activities, including carrying out emergency procedures related to the activities
  •  One of the below:
  1.  Able to demonstrate meeting ropes course training certification requirements, including, but not limited to: ability to put on & remove harness, set up climbing gear on the course via the use of ladders and other equipment, ability to carry gear (e.g. carabiners, pulleys, belay devices, ropes, etc.) that may range from 5-15 pounds, ability to use supportive and guiding language to help campers with anxiety through course elements, and ability to perform rescue if necessary (if suspended in air, must be strong enough to help support the weight of another camper/participant; if on ground, must be able to belay camper/participant in need of rescue). 
  2.  Able to demonstrate meeting lifeguard certification requirements, including but not limited to: swimming 300 yards continuously, treading water at least 2 minutes continuously, diving to a depth of 10 feet to retrieve an object, and swimming while towing another person and consistently supporting their head above the water. Sitting in, balancing in, moving about, and paddling a canoe independently in a lake
