Camp Healthcare Staff (RN, EMT, PA, NP, MD, DO, or upper-level student or recent grad in these fields)

Job Summary
Camp Medical Staff oversee the health and safety of all campers and staff. They are responsible for performing health screenings of all incoming campers and staff, dispensing medications, and maintaining accurate health logs and records. They perform first aid as necessary and appropriate, respond to emergencies, and ensure general health and safety within the health center (affectionately known as “Club Meds”) and throughout camp. Licensure as an RN or prescriber (MD, DO, NP, PA) in Minnesota is required for short term applicants interested in working one or more sessions (4,6, or 13 days), but applicants with other qualifications who can commit to the full summer are also welcomed, such as EMTs, WFRs, or upper-level students/recent graduates in one of the licensure fields. Pay rate dependent on qualifications and experience, up to $1000/week with room and board provided. 

Principal Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in pre-camp orientation/training, including becoming familiar with camp policies/procedures
  • Review all participant health/medical paperwork prior to each session; communicate with parents/caregivers, participants, and/or out-of-camp health providers if more information is needed
  • Respectfully communicate camper health needs to counselors and other camp staff to ensure that staff can successfully help camper’s health needs be met, while maintaining confidentiality
  • Complete health screenings of all incoming campers and staff at the start of each session; document exit notes at the end of each session
  • Administer all participant medications and keep accurate Medication Administration Records; ensure all medications are stored securely and returned to the appropriate person upon check-out
  • Provide basic care for camper and staff illness or injury, including dispensing over the counter medications following One Heartland medical procedures and camper parent/guardian permissions, maintaining accurate and complete health care records, and determining when outside/additional care should be sought.
  • Respond to medical or other related emergencies on camp property; keeps others informed of location and can be quickly communicated with in an emergency
  • Communicate and collaborate with Program Director, Leadership Team members, and other healthcare staff to monitor and support the overall physical, social, and emotional health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff
  • Ensure the Club Meds space and all health supplies are kept clean, organized, accessible, and appropriately stocked
  • Implement and enforce all relevant One Heartland staff and facility policies and procedures as well as all health and industry regulations such as state of Minnesota and ACA (American Camp Association) standards
  • Conduct themself in a professional and friendly manner to ensure positive relations with participants, families, community, volunteers, visitors, and staff
  • (If not licensed as RN, NP, DO, or PA) Maintain daily contact and consultation with organization’s designated registered nurse or licensed prescriber 
 
Required Qualifications and Traits:        
  • Licensure as an RN, prescriber (MD, DO, NP, PA), or EMT in Minnesota most preferred. Licensure as RN or prescriber in Minnesota is required for short term applicants interested in working one or more sessions (4,6, or 13 days). Applicants with other qualifications who can commit to the full summer and able to meet all other position requirements and duties working in consultation with RN or licensed provider are also welcomed to apply including WFRs or upper-level students/recent graduates in one of the licensure fields.
  • Current certification covering adult and pediatric CPR and AED skills.
  • Attention to detail in documentation and maintaining records
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and comfort in communicating with children, young adults, parents/caregivers, and other physical and mental health professionals
  • Desire to work with children, youth, and young adults in a camp setting. Preferred/Helpful: Prior experience with children ages 7-17
  • A commitment to respectfully work with, and honor the identities or experiences of the population(s) served (LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS, currently or formerly unhoused)
  • Preferred/Helpful: Connection to or knowledgeable about one or more of the populations we serve.
  • Preferred/Helpful: Prior professional experience with the population(s) served and understanding of the particular health/medical needs and challenges of the population(s) served
 
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to tolerate prolonged work hours
  • Frequently exposed to crowds and high noise levels
  • Must be able to move about camp indoors and out and work in outdoor weather conditions
