Unit Head
Job Summary:
Unit Heads are the leaders of each unit at camp. (Unit: a group of 3-7 cabin groups, of about 8 participants and 2 staff each.) They work as a resource, guide, and active hands-on supervisor to the counselors in their unit to ensure the best possible outcomes and experiences for every participant. They also work closely with other leadership staff to coordinate and support the logistics of camp life, such as scheduling staff and planning special activities for staff and participants. This is a full-time, live-on-site, summer seasonal position with a pay rate of $350/week with room and board provided. All majors accepted provided required qualifications are met. This position is available as an internship by request.
Principal Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in all pre-camp supervisor and general staff training
- Supervises assigned team of Counselors, ensuring they are meeting expectations of their position and have the tools they need to succeed, including providing regular and timely coaching, mentoring, feedback, evaluation, and disciplinary action as appropriate.
- Provides active ongoing observation, support, and training to Counselors to ensure camper health and safety (physical, mental, social/emotional), as well as positive, fun, safe, inclusive, and equitable camper outcomes and experiences
- Acts as the primary/first-level support to all staff in the unit in mediating and addressing participant conflicts or behavior concerns
- Ensures the appropriate, accurate, and timely documentation and communication of any participant-related concerns in the unit/cabins they supervise
- Coordinates the daily schedule & related logistics of the staff and campers in the unit, in close collaboration with other leadership staff.
- Supports counselors in planning and facilitating cabin group activities, including nightly reflections, daily “cabin time” programming, other cabin community-building activities, and activities to fill downtime.
- Works as part of overall summer leadership team, including planning and leading camp-wide activities and events, participating in leadership team and staff meetings, collaboratively and productively problem solving to address camper or staff issues that arise, and supporting logistics of camp life such as participant arrival and check-in, staff time-off coordination, staff appreciation, and ongoing all-staff training
- Follows and enforces all One Heartland staff and facility policies and procedures as well as all health and industry regulations such as state of Minnesota and ACA (American Camp Association) standards
- Stewardship & conservation: Always takes care to use program, facility, and natural resources wisely
- Conducts themself in a professional and friendly manner to ensure positive relations with participants, families, community, volunteers, visitors, and staff
- Other duties as assigned/Support other team members and projects as needed
Required Qualifications and Traits:
- Experience working with youth between the ages of 7 and 17
- Experience using a strengths-based and/or collaborative approach to behavior management in a classroom, camp, or other youth services setting
- Experience planning and facilitating activities or lessons with youth
- 1+ summers of prior experience in a camper-focused role in a residential (overnight) camp setting
- Connection to or knowledgeable about one or more of the populations we serve (LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS, currently or formerly unhoused) and most importantly a commitment to respectfully work with, and honor the identities or experiences of, our participants from all of these populations.
- Strong interpersonal communication/relational skills, particularly as related to the ability to effectively teach, direct, supervise, coach, lead, and support other staff
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and comfort in communicating with children, young adults, parents/caregivers, and other One Heartland staff
- Able to problem-solve and adapt quickly
- Commitment to active inclusion and making sure everyone feels welcome, included, and celebrated
- Highly organized, participant-focused, safety-conscious, approachable, flexible, and works well as part of a team
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (certification available during staff training)
Helpful Qualifications:
- Experience and/or training in trauma-informed approaches to youthwork or education
- Experience and/or training in restorative practices
- Prior experience with the communities served
- Prior work experience in a supervisory role
- Experience with one or more camp activity areas: canoeing, archery, bicycling, climbing wall, low ropes/teambuilding facilitation, high ropes course, arts & crafts, cooking, dance, drama, sports/games, nature, swimming, fishing, teen leadership/life skills development
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to tolerate prolonged work hours
- Frequently exposed to crowds and high noise levels
- Must be able to move about camp indoors and out and work in outdoor weather conditions
