Independent Stave Company Entomology Research-Summer Internship

Internship Overview:
Independent Stave Company is seeking a well-organized and motivated individual to work within the Log Procurement department. In this role, the intern will: assist with field surveys and documentation of major forest insects and study their potential impact on white oak staves related to our manufacturing of quality white oak barrels for the wine and spirits industry. This research area could be groundbreaking in identifying and addressing a potential threat to the stave and cooperage industry.
Examples of Work 
Duties may include: • setting and monitoring insect traps for plant pests; • conducting visual surveys for plant pests • driving to and from survey sites; • collecting samples of plant pests for diagnostic purposes, and • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:
A high school degree is required. Additional qualifications include Microsoft Office software proficiency, ability to negotiate and work in different types of forested terrain on foot under various weather conditions, ability to travel around a multi-state area, and a valid driver’s license. 
Preferred Qualifications:
Coursework in Forestry, Plant Pathology, Natural Resource Management, Entomology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field; experience using forest sampling techniques; ability to recognize major tree species and basic identification skills;
Special Requirements:
NOTE: This is an hourly wage ($17.00/hr) (Summer Intern) position that pays up to 45 hrs. Per week, not to exceed 12 weeks between May and August 2021. A housing allowance is available.
Locations: This position can be housed in any of the following states. Kentucky, Ohio, or Tennessee. Some travel will be required during the internship period.
