Summer Camp Unit Leader-Camp Meriwether

Job Summary
  • Looking for a place to make a difference and spend your summer outside? Do you have a passion for summer camp, high adventure, crafts, outdoor skills, STEM or empowering girls, teens and young women then Camp Meriwether is for you! We are a true camp complete with a lake for canoe, kayak; a challenge course; a large equestrian program; miles of hiking trails; arts and crafts; large swimming pool and climate controlled cabins and dining hall. 
  • During the summer we operate a premiere residential program for 2nd-12th graders. We are looking for dynamic young women to provide a top rate camping experience for your girls. All staff will live and work on camp starting the end of May until the beginning of August. In the evenings we will spend time with our friends around the campfire, or at a pool party, or show off our talents at the amphitheater. Staff can expect to have from Saturday at noon through Sunday at noon off each week. Staff applying should have a willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure the girls have a fantastic time while at camp and be 100% girl focused while in your care!
  • Supervise campers and staff, guiding and participating in the Leadership Development programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Directly involved with all the campers and staff in unit – Manage, oversee, and supervise all campers and staff within assigned unit (around 60 people, staff and campers).
  • Participate in supervisor training prior to camp.
  • Live in a cabin with a fellow Unit Leader or other adult staff.
  • Directly responsible for all unit activities with campers.
  • Serve as direct supervisor for all counselors in the designated unit. Perform regular evaluations for these counselors with help from Assistant Director.
  • Represent the unit on issues involving the camp community and participate in problem solving sessions.
  • Serve as a role model and guide campers and staff in appropriate behaviors, language, attitudes, and activities.
  • Maintain and foster campers self-esteem.
  • Careful and considerate correction of children’s behavior and support them in their success at camp.
  • Help girls and staff develop individual responsibility to include morning routines, hygiene, and cabin chores.
  • Keep their supervisor informed of plans, problems and concerns pertinent to girls, staff and program areas.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills & Experience Needed:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as a leader.
  • Desire and stamina to work with children and young adults in a camp setting.
  • Maturity in problem solving and decision making as it regards to the wellbeing of campers, even in an emergency.
  • Able and willing to work with a variety of staff members in a calm, collected manner at all times.
  • Good health and stamina necessary to live in the camp setting and traverse rough and uneven terrain 2-5 miles per day.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Sense of adventure and enthusiasm to motivate and coach campers and staff.
  • Preferred minimum age 21 with at least 2 years of camp counselor experience.
  • Preferred knowledge of the Girl Scouts.
  • Provide proof of USA citizenship or appropriate Alien documentation.
  • Must be able to complete & clear a Criminal, and Sex Offender background check.
