CDC Health Communications Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research training opportunity is currently available as part of the COVID-19 Emergency Operations Center response efforts on the State, Tribal, Local and Territorial (STLT) Task Force, within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Research Project: Hosted by NCBDDD, and under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training on:
- Approaches to interest and action related to public health priorities
- Contributing to the development of public health briefing and meeting materials
- Analyzing public health regulations, and departmental policy issuances
- Participating in the development of new initiatives that contribute to improvements in public health
- Contributing to the development of internal and external reports and other administrative level documents
- Monitoring program performance through various internal and external performance reporting channels
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor and collaborating with various CDC stakeholders, the selected participant will have the opportunity to be trained in the activities in support of outreach to state/local health partners to include the following:
- Training in coordination of CDC emergency-related information related information-sharing and outreach efforts using various channels including email, Web, and social media
- Training in recruitment and maintenance of internal and external partnerships and promotion
- Training in development of proposals for conference call presentations, securing subject matter expert (SME) participation, and message/material dissemination and follow-up
- How to conduct periodic assessments of public health and medical professional organizations to identify and address outstanding emergency-related information needs
The participant will learn the core functions of clinical partner outreach, enhanced messaging tailored to public health professionals and public health professionals’ needs, communication assessments and activities to develop communication and response capacity.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Spring/Summer 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
