ACE CRDIP: Archeology Survey- Martin Van Buren National Historic Site
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking a DHA Archeology Survey Member interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site in Kinderhook, NY.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces undergraduate and graduate students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.
A DHA (Direct Hire Authority) Internship targets exceptional upper-level undergraduate or graduate students that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. DHA positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
DHA applicants will be involved in cultural resource management projects that generate data and/or research that must be analyzed and presented to various stakeholders at the end of the internship. If the position is an education or interpretation project, the participant must research, develop, and pilot a program or materials for use at the host site. After successful completion of the internship, and graduation from their degree program, the intern will receive DHA non-competitive hiring eligibility.
Location: Kinderhook, NY is situated in the lovely Hudson Valley in a suburban/rural environment about 30 minutes south of Albany, NY. Grocery stores, farm markets, pharmacies and restaurants are within a 10-15 minute drive from the park. Art galleries, theaters and specialty shops are available in Albany or in nearby Hudson, NY.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $560/week to offset the cost of food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.
Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS, but park staff can assist the member with locating suitable accommodations. A reimbursement of ~$2,000/month will be provided to help offset the cost of housing.
Project Background and Goals: In the next two years, the park will start work on several large-scale projects including pre-planning and scoping of a Visitor Center/Headquarter structure as well as project planning and compliance for the restoration of the Martin Van Buren era orchard. The development of a GIS database of known archeological sites within the park is crucial for these projects to move forward. The goal is for the resulting database to allow for more informed and better decision-making regarding the necessary pathways for planning, compliance, consultation, and design of the upcoming large-scale projects.
Position Description: The ACE member will serve as the project lead as part of a highly collaborative team of NPS archeologists, park staff, the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO), and others. Duties will include:
- Learn about the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Sect. 106 compliance, and the consultation process
- Work as the project lead to complete a pedestrian survey and a GIS survey in order to create a GIS database of known archeological sites within the park
- Engage with and present project results to the Stockbridge-Munsee tribal council and THPO as well as park staff and the Northeast Archeological Resource Program (NARP)
- Encouraged to participate in professional development training opportunities related to safety, operational leadership, and workplace inclusion
Qualifications:
Required:
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program
- Working knowledge of GIS
- Willing and able to represent ACE and NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
- This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements
- Must be 18-30 years of age to apply

- Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation

- Basic understanding of archeology
