Special Education Coordinator

ACSD is seeking a Special Education Coordinator for the 2021-2022 school year.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Ames Community School District is to ensure that all learners develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and personal esteem necessary to grow in and shape a changing society.


PURPOSE 
Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Coordinator will support all areas of special education with an emphasis on behavior. The coordinator’s work involves program planning and development of the therapeutic classrooms, CPI, Chapter 103, PBIS, social emotional learning, and programming for students with various academic and behavioral needs.


RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supports therapeutic classroom and grant, if funded.
  • Supports principals and building teams in the implementation of PBIS.
  • Supports principals with the behavior problem solving process including intensive plans that include components of a FBA and a BIP.
  • Collaborates with the director to provide professional development to behavior interventionists and administrators.
  • Coordinates professional development focused on Nonviolent Trauma informed Crisis interventions and Chapter 103 and Senate File 2360.
  • Assists the behavior interventionists as they work to support the application of social skills instruction, classroom management, and positive behavior intervention strategies.
  • Assists behavior interventionists in supporting special education teachers in writing IEPs that are compliant with state and federal regulations, are effective instructional guides, and communicate services and supports clearly and accurately.
  • Works with special education teachers to provide assistance in researching different instructional practices and/or supplemental curriculum materials including Essential Elements and alternate assessment.
  • Assists behavior interventionists as they observe and coach teachers regarding instructional and classroom management practices.
  • Collaborates with hiring team to assist in interviewing and hiring Educational Associates for the District.
  • Develops and provides professional learning opportunities while updating and maintaining the Professional Learning Library Google Classroom for all District Educational Associates.
  • Delivers Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Communicates, models, and assesses appropriate and effective use of de-escalation, restraint, and seclusion processes and procedures.
  • Oversees Chapter 103/Senate File 2360 implementation.
  • Provides annual Verbal Intervention Training that includes preventative supports, de-escalation strategies, Chapter 103 guidelines.
  • Works collaboratively and communicates effectively with district level curriculum personnel to ensure equitable access to core instruction and instructional practices that will increase student achievement for students with disabilities.
  • Works collaboratively with principals, behavior interventionists, special education teachers, and district level personnel to support the implementation of IEPs and the application of supplemental materials/supports.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Special Education to identify District improvement priorities in special education.
  • Meets regularly with AEA and Director of Special Education to create a common understanding of special education procedures and consistency of expectations.
  • Assists principals in assuring special education teachers are providing services as indicated in the IEP.
  • Assists principals in evaluating the need for educational associates.
  • Attends work on a consistent and punctual basis.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education
  • Valid Iowa Department of Education license required
  • CPI certification
  • Experience working in an integrated services (behavior) classroom or as a behavior interventionist preferred

The successful candidate will exhibit:
  • Experience in implementing or managing systems of positive behavior support in the classroom and consulting using proven methods is strongly preferred
  • Ability to make sound decisions within the parameters of authority
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgement in resolving problems
  • Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • CPI Trainer
  • Experience in providing professional development to large and varied groups
  • Experience in supporting teachers’ professional learning and growth on an individualized basis
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations
Work Schedule: Teacher contract days plus 20 additional days
