CDC Health Communications Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available with the Travelers' Health Branch (THB) of the Division of Global Mitigation and Quarantine (DGMQ), within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
THB’s mission is to enhance the health and safety of U.S. travelers and U.S. citizens living abroad by using new data sources, surveillance systems, and analytical models to articulate global risk assessments and provide the most appropriate risk reduction recommendations for international destinations.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will contribute to the development and production of several health communication and education products designed for travelers and travel medicine healthcare providers. The participant will train with health communication and education specialists, public health professionals, medical officers, and subject matter experts both within and outside CDC.
Research projects will include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating with branch staff to publish the next edition of CDC’s Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel (a widely used text of travel medicine)
- Assisting with development of a digital content strategy for the Yellow Book
- Assisting with development of a comprehensive dissemination strategy for the Yellow Book
- Developing a range of materials to translate travel medicine content for the general public and other audiences
Learning objectives:
- Increased knowledge and self-efficacy in the application of public health and communication science principles
- Increased knowledge of how to build and translate materials appropriate for diverse audiences using the principles of plain language, health literacy, and clear communication
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
