Overview

Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a Veterinary Research Scientist with a strong background in Physiology/Infectious Disease/Pharmacology to join a team of researchers dedicated to the Lovelace mission of advancing and bettering human health. 
 
If you are looking to be part of a team with the goal of improving human and animal health, we’re looking for you. In this role you will collaborate in a fast paced integrated environment to perform basic and applied research in a facility accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)
In addition to providing technical guidance and oversight to personnel in the Pharmacology and Infectious Disease groups, the Veterinary Research Scientist will serve as the principal investigator or study director on a variety of sponsored programs; supervise and oversee the development and evaluation of disease models and safety/efficacy studies; support and develop investigator-initiated sponsored research programs; and perform all other related duties as required or assigned. 
 
The Veterinarian will develop new experimental animal models to support basic-applied science research and preclinical drug development, provide pre- and post-operative veterinary care to a variety of species, provide preventative care and animal-colony health management, work closely with surgical research technicians, animal technicians and support staff, and conduct all procedures according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) guidelines.
 
The candidate should be able to maintain documentation at a high level and interface with multiple scientific staff in a fast-paced environment.  The candidate will evolve in a team-oriented environment where highly integrated research is performed to provide Lovelace programs, government agencies, pharmaceutical partners, and industrial entities with data and reports for incorporation in scientific publication and regulatory filings. The individual will oversee and participate in the scheduling, design and conduct of various studies in the laboratory as requested by Lovelace and external sponsors.


Qualifications

Requires a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or DVM/PhD with a background in cardio-pulmonary physiology, infectious disease, or a directly related field, and a minimum of 2 years of directly-related veterinary experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained. 
 
Must have a demonstrated thorough knowledge of animal anatomy, medicine, physiology and pathology. The candidate must also have familiarity with the USDA Animal Welfare act and the methodologies and principles of Good Laboratory Practices.
 
The Veterinarian must have superior professional-level written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team of researchers.  Must have professional-level computer skills in Microsoft Office, as well as the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed. The successful candidate will have a strong compassion for the well-being of animals involved in research and the emotional capacity and sensitivity to support colleagues who work in research environments on a daily basis.
 
Requires the ability to work in containment facilities (ABSL-3+, etc.) which may require vaccinations/immunizations, background checks and other fitness for duty tests, and the ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB).


Preferred/Additional Qualifications

Current state veterinary license in any state in the United States is required. Selected candidate will be required to obtain licensure within New Mexico within six months of starting position.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience.
