Geomicrobiology: Microbial Communities from Energy Systems

Through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) this posting seeks a recent Bachelor's graduate to engage in Onshore Unconventional Resources, CO2 Utilization, Water Management, Hydrogen Storage research with Research Innovation Center (RIC) researchers at the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

 

This project focuses on DNA extraction and PCR amplification of microbial communities from energy systems. Energy systems include coalbed methane wells, oil and gas reservoirs, subsurface aquifers, and power plant waste effluents. The selected participant will collaborate with the mentor and collaborating contract researchers specializing in geomicrobiology, and help increase the DNA analysis throughput of several different projects within NETL.

 

The selected participant will further their DNA sequencing knowledge and experience, as well as gain experience in experimental planning, communication of results, and collaborating with researcher within and outside the field of microbiology. The selected participant will also learn various bioinformatic pipelines to better understand how to assess a DNA dataset to inform the project on relevant microbial community processes in energy systems.
