Computer Scientist, High-Performance Computing

The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a scientist to conduct research and development of PNNL's fundamental Computer Science capability. PNNL is leading innovative research in emerging computing systems, high-performance computing, and hardware/software codesign and is seeking a scientist with a deep technical background in these areas. Candidates should have proven track record in conducting and publishing research, defining research objectives within a set of defined priorities, being self-motivated in setting and accomplishing goals, and participating in multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate should have a strong publication record and interest in independent research in fundamental computer science that fits within the context of organizational and national priorities and research directions. Candidates should also bring a passion for working with multi-disciplinary teams and lead fundamental, high-visibility research with deep impact on laboratory computing strategy.

Major areas of responsibility include:
  • Participating in research teams in all fundamental areas of computing, including system software and hardware/software codesign
  • Contributing to successful proposals, peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and other technical artifacts for internal and external use
  • Contributing to computing and computer science strategic direction at the group and division level
  • Representing PNNL's computer science capabilities to external parties, such as sponsoring agencies and the broader research community
  • Cultivating internal and external multidisciplinary partnerships
  • This position provides outstanding opportunities to:
  • Participate in teams of researchers in fundamental computer science research in areas of high-performance computing, emerging systems, system software, and hardware/software codesign.
  • Participate in business development activities, including the preparation of project and program proposals targeting funding sources within the US Government interested in advancing computer science and high-performance computing research.
  • Train and mentor junior-level researchers.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 2 : Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security. Communicates the importance within the work team. Building networks at a local and capability level. Effectively teaming to share resources and optimize research at the group and division level. Mentoring junior staff and students.

Level 3 : Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self with programmatic impact at the sector and division level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Developing and optimizing capabilities at the division level. Developing external reputation. Building effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate. Contributing to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments

Minimum Qualifications
BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience
  • Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or closely related technical area
  • Experience conducting research in advanced computer processor and memory architecture, system software for novel or advanced high-performance computing systems, compilers targeting advanced architectures, scientific machine learning, or other related technical areas.
