CDC Healthy Tribes Evaluation Fellowship

A research opportunity is available with the Division of Population Health (DPH), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Across the life span, American Indians and Alaska Natives have higher rates of disease, injury, and premature death than other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Conflict with the US government and racial discrimination have compromised the culture, traditional lifeways, and wellness of American Indians and Alaska Natives. These challenges and other social determinants of health have contributed to poor health conditions and outcomes for Tribal communities. American Indian and Alaska Native traditions and culture, however, strengthen evidence-based interventions and improve health outcomes. Since 2014, The Healthy Tribes program has worked with American Indian Tribes, Alaska Native villages, Tribal organizations, Urban Indian Organizations, and Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TECs) to promote health, prevent disease, and strengthen connections to culture and lifeways that improve health and wellness. The Healthy Tribes program includes a portfolio of three programs that aim to strengthen the public health infrastructure, promote cultural and traditional practices that support health and wellness, and integrate evidence-based chronic disease interventions to improve the health of Tribal communities.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn how to provide program evaluation guidance, technical assistance and support to American Indian Tribes, Alaska Native villages, Tribal organizations, Urban Indian Organizations, and Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TECs) recipients on performance measurement, evaluation planning and implementation, and the reporting and dissemination of process and outcome evaluation results and findings. This fellowship offers the participant practice-based training in the following activities:
- Serve as a member of the HT Program Team to learn how to provide evaluation guidance, technical assistance, and support to American Indian Tribes, Alaska Native villages, Tribal organizations, Urban Indian Organizations, and Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TECs) recipients on performance measurement, evaluation planning and implementation, and the reporting and dissemination of process and outcome evaluation results and findings
- Learn how to design and implement national evaluations and evaluation technical assistance systems, processes, and tools to support recipient-specific evaluations of HT programs
- Learn how to assess, coordinate, document, and use data on evaluation technical assistance needs, activities, and services to facilitate continuous program improvements
- Learn how to develop standard operating procedures and guidance materials around recipient-specific evaluations for HT programs
- Perform qualitative coding, analysis and synthesis of recipient evaluation report findings
- Performance quantitative analysis of performance measure data collected from HT program recipients
- Identify tools and resources to promote culturally responsive evaluation practices among HT recipients
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer 2021; start date is flexible
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
