5th Grade Teacher

Meeker Elementary is seeking a 5th Grade Teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.

Summary
Under the general supervision of the Building Principal, the classroom teacher facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Instructional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Structures a physical classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and maximizes student learning.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve an optimal learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Uses prescribed curriculum materials in conformity with District expectations.
  • Ensures student attainment of subject area objectives.
  • Provides a variety of planned learning experiences using a range of instructional techniques in order to motivate students and best utilize time for instruction.
  • Collaborates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, plan instruction, design common formative assessments, and examine student work and assessment results to improve their own and others’ effectiveness.
  • Effectively meets the academic and social needs of each student through differentiated practices.
  • Establishes a system of student evaluation within guidelines prescribed by the District.
  • Is available for counseling with students and parents during preparation periods as well as before and after school.
  • Participates in the development and revision of course outlines for classes taught. This shall include goals and performance objectives for students, course content and learning activities, evaluative procedures, and instructional materials.
  • Creates a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students and staff.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with building and District staff.
  • Engages in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Follows and abides by District policies.
Adjunct Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs basic attendance, accounting, and administrative tasks as required.
  • Observes the designated work hours.
  • Is available for special assignments.
  • Attends school and District meetings.
  • Performs supervision as needed.
  • Shares the responsibility of interpreting the educational program to the community through such activities as open house, back-to-school night, and PTA meetings.
  • Seeks to improve competency by participating in personal and professional growth activities in conjunction with building and District goals.
  • Participates cooperatively with the building Principal to develop a system by which they will be evaluated in conformance with the District’s guidelines for evaluations and assessment.
  • Assumes the responsibility for written lesson plans and substitutes.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of aides and other educational assistants and student teachers when applicable.
  • Attends work on a consistent and punctual basis.

Qualifications:
  • Valid Iowa teaching license or the ability to obtain one prior to the start of the school year required.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels preferred.
  • Ability to pass a background check required.
The successful candidate will exhibit: 
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as diverse instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
