Groundskeeper I - IV - Boomerang Links Golf - Seasonal

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job Summary:
The Groundskeeper ensures the physical aspects of the community are maintained and standards are met regarding the grounds, amenities, and overall curb appeal of the City of Greeley. This individual will work with a diverse team on a variety of projects and assignments, while serving locations in the Culture, Parks and Recreation Department for events such as the Greeley Stampede and Weld County Fair. Other venues include supporting amenities at dog shows, arts picnic, sporting tournaments, natural areas and trails, museums, cemetery, other historic events and the city’s urban forest.
The Groundskeeper role is a hands-on, hardworking individual who must be willing to drop anything and everything for an emergency; big or small. The City relies on the Groundskeeper to follow safety protocols, while being responsive, thorough, and a super resourceful go-getter with a customer focused mindset.
Scheduling for this position varies and may include working evenings, weekends, and holidays, as followed by State and Federal law.

Salary:
Level I       $12.32       
Level II       $12.50 - $14.00
Level III      $13.50 - $14.75  
Level IV      $14.25 – $17.28  

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
Level I
• No Previous Experience required;
• Must be 16 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license;
• Ability to work a variety of small and large events and venues; 
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to take both written and verbal instructions;
• Ability and willingness to assist others with questions about facilities operations, hours, and general regulations;
• Possess good manual dexterity to perform painting and refurbishment work (i.e. picnic tables, trash receptacles and buildings);
• Ability to operate golf carts, turf utility vehicles, and two-stroke engine tools including string trimmers, hand and backpack blowers; hand power tools, push mowers, shop equipment, etc.

Level II
• 1+ year of experience in grounds maintenance or similar field required;
• Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license;
• Ability to identify most common native vs. non-native plant species; 
• Ability to safety operate:
  + a motor vehicle on public roadways, including trucks and utility vehicles (i.e. ATV & UTV)
  + golf carts and lawn mowers that span various open spaces and trail corridors;
  + power equipment, such as sod cutters, buffalo blowers, edgers, and hand blowers;
  + 3 gang rough unit and 3’ wide rotary mowing units, used for mowing greens, tees, collars, verti-cut and rolling used for cemetery grounds, small park areas, and small parkways;

Level III
• 2+ years of experience in park grounds, cemetery, golf course, horticulture or arboriculture, open space management, Rights of Way or similar fields required
• Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license; 
• Knowledge of soil tillage and arena footing highly desired;
• Ability to identify native and non-native plants of concern in open spaces and make informed decisions on the actions based on each species;
• Ability to safely operate:
  + 5 gang mowing units used to mow fairways and rough;
  + 3’-10’ wide riding mowers used in Parks, Cemetery, and Rights of Way;
  + brush weed-eater, rototiller, snow throwers, and backpack blower;
  + commercial truck and pull a trailer with loaded equipment;
  + special equipment that is used throughout the year (i.e. aerification machines, topdressing equipment, Lely spreader, field line painter, lip renovator, infield leveler, sweeper cleaners, hedge trimmers, pole saw pruners, water tanks ATV’s, UTV’s, portable stages, etc.)

Level IV
• 3+ years of experience working in park grounds, cemetery, golf course, open space, horticulture, arboriculture, rights of way or similar fields required;
• Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license;
• Ability to safely operate;
  + water truck, forklift, tractors, front end loaders, excavators and skid loader machines and their various attachments, including backhoe, auger, pathway surface leveler, arena groomer, rock picker, brush mower and grooming attachments;
  + chainsaws and wood chippers in team settings;
  + rotary mowers 16’ wide or larger in turf areas
• Ability to lead small group projects and assignments;
• Ability to walk throughout facility grounds of various topographical conditions to visually identify needed work and inspect work results;
• Handle difficult situations using tact, patience, and good judgment.

Essential Functions:
Level I
• Clean and stock restrooms; including port-a-lets;
• Clean and remove debris from shelters and turf areas;
• Empty trash receptacles regularly throughout assigned areas;
• Assist with repairs and maintenance of playgrounds, shelters, hard courts and site furnishings, grooming and striping athletic fields, while inspecting building sites for vandalism and graffiti;
• Daily raking and preparation of golf course sand bunkers, including blowing debris, filling divots, repairing ball marks and moving tee markers;
• Pull weeds in landscape beds and mulched parking lot medians;
• Perform vegetation management of non-turf and off-trail landscapes in open spaces and along trails; including utilization of hand work on native and non-native/noxious species;
• Perform hand watering and simple water valve operation for lawns and landscape beds;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Level II
• Maintain all of the responsibilities of Level I, plus the following:
• Roll greens safely using a sideways propelled speed roller;
• Plant and prune forestry-related or horticultural maintenance;
• Clean and maintain Right of Way medians and tree lawns;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Level III
• Maintain all of the responsibilities for Levels I and II, plus the following:
• Set up the golf courses for daily play, by cutting cups, setting tee marker locations, and evaluating course conditions;
• Perform athletic field maintenance by building mounds, setting up temporary fencing, installing home plates and pitching rubbers;
• Perform tree trimming and debris removal along trail corridors;
• Assist in proper loading and securement of equipment in the field;
• Ensure proper setup and grooming of fields and arenas for a variety of sporting events, including baseball, soccer, equestrian, motocross, BMX and demolition derbies;
• Plan and maintain gardens that reflect the historic nature of the site and various seasonal care;
• Setup large fence panels on uneven terrain for special events and equipment demonstrations;
• Perform basic irrigation tasks, including roller base set up and tear down, hand watering, sprinkler adjustment, soil moisture identification and management;
• Assist with herbicide application and other more technical weed management tasks;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Level IV
• Maintain all of the responsibilities for Levels I, II, and III plus the following:
• Perform more technical irrigation work to include mainline repair, system redesign, and valve replacements;
• Apply fertilizer, pesticide, and insecticide chemical applications using manual and ride-on spreaders, hand held and backpack sprayers, and vehicle mounted sprayers;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
• Exposure to high traffic areas in medians and right-or-ways, parks, athletic facilities, cemetery grounds, event arenas, living history outdoor museum grounds and golf courses.
• Work outside with exposure to all weather elements
• Long periods of time involved in planting, hand weeding and maintaining grounds using a shovel, rake and other tools.
• Hours may be flexible depending on assigned area, 32-40 hrs per wk. Primarily M-F 6 a.m. – 4 p.m., with weekends and holidays as assigned.
• Extended hours operating grounds equipment - i.e. poly cord trimmers, mowers, & a multitude of other equipment.
• Incumbent may facilitate with burial services on a regular bases.
• Incumbent may be exposed to loud amplified sound equipment while working arena show grounds.
• Follow workplace safety rules at all times.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and general public.
• Handle difficult situations using tact, patience and good judgment.

Physical Requirements:
• Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending and walking, climbing ladders and stairs.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
• Ability to lift arm above shoulder level and to move objects.
• Mix and use chemicals for weed and grass control following label and local regulations.
• Manual dexterity enough to operate hand and power tools.
• Vision enough to perform above functions and to read printed instructions.
• Exposure to vegetation that can cause punctures, biting insects, wildlife, off-leash dogs
• Exposure to homeless/transient individuals and camps which may pose biohazard risks.
