Forestry Technician I

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Salary: $17.95 - $24.24 Hourly

Job Summary:
The Forestry Horticulture Maintenance Technician I performs general horticultural maintenance within the parks system. Duties include, but are not limited to, planting trees, shrubs, perennials, and bedding plants; tilling and amending soil; watering; pruning; deadheading; weed control; trash cleanup; equipment repairs; operation of a variety of motorized equipment and hand and power tools; traffic control set up, and supervision of hourly/seasonal staff.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
• Two years grounds maintenance, arboricultural, horticultural or related experience;
• Possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record;
• Knowledge in the use of hand pruning tools;
• Knowledge of horticultural maintenance, planting and pruning techniques helpful.

Essential Functions:
• Operate power equipment used for horticultural maintenance;
• Set up traffic control devices in a standardized manner;
• Operate hand tools, power tools, light trucks and tractors;
• Apply pesticides in a safe manner;
• Perform strenuous labor in all types of weather;
• Perform daily and weekly evaluations, formulate and implement appropriate plans. 
• Follow instructions, both verbal and written;
• Work independently as well as with others;
• Follow established safety policies and practices.

Work Environment:
• Exposure to adverse weather conditions;
• Exposure to various types of machinery noise - some levels are excessive;
• Exposure to hazardous chemicals;
• Exposure to heavy vehicle traffic areas

Physical Requirements: 
• Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment and grounds and to operate vehicles and equipment;
• Manual dexterity enough to operate tools, vehicles and equipment;
• Flexibility enough to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies or tools;
• Ability to move over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance;
• Stamina and strength enough to lift and/or move 50 lbs. or more;
• Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continuously over extended periods of time.
