Safety Specialist I/II

ALLETE, Inc., a reliable provider of energy in the upper Midwest, has an opening for a Safety Specialist I/II in electric transmission and distribution operations based in the Duluth, MN area.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under general direction, develop, implement, and administer occupational safety and health programs. 
  • Acquire, possess, and apply a broad knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, practices, and procedures. 
  • Interpret and assure compliance with safety and health regulations and policies. 
  • Assist in preparation and delivery of training materials and information.
  • Perform facility and field hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Conduct job safety analyses to develop safe work procedures. 
  • Compile and submit required OSHA and company reports. 
  • Conduct incident investigations and work with area leadership on actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Participate in safety meetings and serve as the safety and health subject matter expert.
  • Interact and process information within ALLETEs Safety Management Information System.
  • Assist Project Managers with job specific safety and health planning.
  • Participate in employee-led Safety Improvement Team (SIT) meetings.
  • Learn and understand transmission and distribution operations.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain productive internal and external working relationships.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent
  • Bachelors in engineering discipline with qualifying safety designation may be used as an equivalency for example: Certified Safety Professional through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals
  • Professional safety certification or advanced education is preferred.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Safety Specialist I
  • No experience required 

Safety Specialist II
  • Four years or more related work experience required

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Up to 50% travel required within Minnesota Power’s electric service territory.
  • Occasional response on mutual aid is expected.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
