The Grant Coordinator serves as the Governor's Office of Economic Development's lead staff person responsible for the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and four state grant programs part of Building South Dakota. This position may also lend expertise and assistance to other grant opportunities pursued by GOED from time to time.
As the Grant Coordinator, the incumbent will evaluate the substantive merits of grant applications and recommends funding on the basis of need, benefit, and local effort; present recommendations in both written and oral form to a variety of levels of approval within the agency; work closely with municipal, county, and non-profit officials to develop applications and effectively administer grants; and prepare all grant documents and forms for signatures, maintains accurate records, and timely completes required reporting.
The position interprets state and federal rules and regulations to ensure that projects are in compliance at all times. Additionally, grant files must be well organized and documented at all times. This position also performs periodic on-site monitoring of active grants in various field locations around the state.
In addition to grant coordinator duties, this position serves as staff support for a variety of GOED programs and initiatives on an as-needed basis.
Occasional travel required.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
Licenses and Certifications: 
Federal grant experience preferred. 
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: 
A bachelor's degree in business, economics, accounting, or related field with 1-2 relevant experience is preferred. Applicants with excellent communication skills are also preferred.
Knowledge of:
  • basic finance principles;
  • internal control processes and policies;
  • federal grant processes and procedures;
  • data storage and organization tactics.
Skill to:
  • distinguish between high and low priority items;
  • make decisions under pressure and time constraints;
  • work with grant applicants, economic development partners, and other state agencies;
  • integrate disparate information into clear, concise recommendations for GOED management and oversight boards.
Ability to:
  • comprehend and apply pertinent laws, rules and policies;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • facilitate decision-making;
  • work with a team or individually.
