Soil Conservationist (Urban Conservationist)

Summary

This position is located in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC), NRCS, Assistant State Conservationist, Indiana State Office.

The Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC) Mission Area is USDA's focal point for the nation's farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners for crop insurance, conservation programs and technical assistance and credit and commodity programs, and disaster programs

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice on natural issues requiring development or adaptation of processes and procedures.
  • Recommends and justify appropriate natural resource management strategies and serves as NRCS official in the resolution of conflicts related to NRCS natural resources conservation programs.
  • Provides direction to landowners and operators, individually and in groups, to develop a wide variety of conservation plans according to established policies and procedures and in accordance with landowners' decisions.
  • Ensure team resource conservationists, field office personnel and technical service providers have proper tools and technology to carry out Farm Bill Programs, resource conservation planning, contracting, and conservation management.\Resolves natural resource issues within the managerial unit arising from landowners' development of conservation plans and manages the application of planned resource management systems to ensure landowners remain compliant with agency standards.
  • Responsible for the application of conservation practices and directs site surveys, practice designs, and layout.
  • Prepares, revises, and/or directs the preparation and revision of resources conservation plans and long-term contracts on units of land within the managerial unit of responsibility.
  • Makes field surveys and examinations and directs other personnel in securing data, assembling maps, and tabulating needed information.
  • Delivers and explains resource conservation plans and/or contracts to landowners and/or operators. Prepares contract payments for Farm Bill programs.
