Salary Range: $3,398 - $5,148

 

The role: 

 

Are you passionate about safety? Join us as a highway maintenance specialist to help keep our roads safe. In this role, you provide traffic control when needed and road repairs. You will also perform various winter operation tasks like plowing, sanding, deicing and operating a snow blower. You will also assist with providing traffic control and incident clean up. Apply today!

This is a seasonal position that is expected to last approximately 6 months from date of hire. Seasonal positions are regular status, benefits eligible positions, which occur, terminate and recur periodically or regularly.

A day in the life:

  • Operate snowplows to remove snow and ice from roadways.
  • Apply sand, salt and chemical deicers to road surfaces.
  • Remove buildup of sanding materials on roadways.
  • Install tire chains, sanders and snowplows on equipment as needed.
  • Patrol the road system to identify and correct adverse conditions for travelers.
  • Respond to accidents and other emergencies and set up traffic control.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Exposure to noise, extreme heights, adverse weather, heavy equipment, pesticides and hazardous waste materials is expected.
  • Must be able to move around rough terrain, on uneven slopes and may need to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Minimum qualifications:

One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; 

OR

Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training 

 

Special qualifications:

This position requires a maximum 45-minute response time to 600 North Santiam Highway, Detroit, OR 97342 for emergency call-outs.

 

Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, and no air brake restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire one within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training and costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

  • Currently holds a commercial driver license (CDL) with tanker endorsement or a CDL permit.
  • Snow removal experience using heavy equipment such as snow blowers, snowplows, sanding and deicing.
  • Experience operating front end loaders and/or road graders.
  • Experience working cohesively with other team members, the public and other agencies.
