Description:

The Survey and National Register Unit of the Division for Historic Preservation oversees the statewide inventory of historic resources and administers the State and National Registers of Historic Places programs in New York. This unit assists communities and agencies with surveys that identify and evaluate historic districts, buildings, sites, structures and objects worthy of protection and consideration in community planning efforts. Survey and NR staff provide guidance to the public in developing and completing official nomination forms. Additionally, this unit assists in the identification of buildings that are potentially eligible for Tax Credit programs and the processing of Part 1 applications.

The Division for Historic Preservation relies on our Cultural Resource Inventory System (CRIS) to be up-to-date and accurate with property data as it provides the basis for reviews undertaken as part of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Section 14.09 of the New York State Historic Preservation Act of 1980, the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), as well as federal and state historic preservation tax credits programs. To that end, we are looking for a candidate to assist with the migration of research files into our CRIS database in an effort to update and enhance the statewide historic resource inventory.

The Survey and National Register Intern will work to identify pertinent research files, consult CRIS for preexisting records, reconcile hard copy files and electronic data, and index relevant documents for future scanning. The candidate may also participate in group evaluations of National Register eligibility and will be exposed to the various program areas of the Survey and National Register Unit. Experience with geospatial databases and historical research preferred. This will be a part-time, paid position of 8-10 hours a week, preferred Tuesday through Thursday, but flexible office days can be accommodated. This is an on-site position at Peebles Island State Park in Waterford, NY.

All candidates should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, good time management, analytical thinking, and historic research skills. Strong candidates will have an understanding of the geospatial databases, show attention to detail and accuracy, and have excellent organizational skills. Seeking an undergraduate or graduate student with degree concentrations in urban planning, history, architectural history, or historic preservation.

This is a paid internship with the possibility of offering academic credit as well. The intern will work on-site at the Division for Historic Preservation offices at Peebles Island State Park in Waterford, NY.
