Ropes Course Specialist (CORE)

CORE Specialists will work as a team to organize and implement a safe, comprehensive and fun challenge course and other activities geared to the interests and abilities of campers. CORE (Challenging through Outdoor Recreational Experiences) refers to all high ropes courses, low ropes courses, and other teambuilding activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to live on-site
  • Sufficient visual, auditory, communication, and cognitive abilities to teach and communicate with groups participating in the CORE program
  • Physical strength to spot and belay for extended periods and to perform safety checks on the challenge course. Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • CORE training provided April 23-26, 2024

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with children and adults with disabilities
  • Leadership experience
  • Lifeguard and CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (we provide a lifeguarding course!)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Essential Functions:

  • Provide guidance, supervision and leadership to a cabin group of 6 to 8 campers per week.
  • Ability to work with people of differing abilities to provide a safe camp experience.
  • Ability to receive and follow general instructions; plan, lead and participate in meaningful activities; and assist the Camp in meeting camper goals and objectives to ensure a positive camping experience for each camper.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn effective discipline techniques, behavior management plans and strategies for working with children with disabilities.
  • Contribute to a positive camp atmosphere by being respectful to others, the Camp and yourself.
  • Ability to use effective and appropriate self-care practices for maintaining overall wellness.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop CORE activities that are appropriate for the intended audience, utilizing overall camp goals and communication with counselors regarding their campers.
  • Follow all operating procedures laid out in the CORE Specialist manual, maintain all CORE equipment and appropriate paperwork relating to the challenge course.
  • Lead challenge course and other activities as assigned by the administrative staff.
  • Live with and supervise a group of 6 to 8 campers with other staff. This requires staff to be a positive role model for campers and other staff members.
  • Assume responsibility for each camper’s safety and social, emotional, mental and physical well-being.
  • Assume responsibility for camper supervision, behavior management and camp programming as assigned.
  • Help each camper grow and adjust to other campers and to Camp life.
  • Work with administrative staff to manage camper behaviors, use effective discipline techniques and ask for further assistance as needed.
  • Lead and prepare activities with other staff, while encouraging camper participation in all activities.
  • Complete weekly progress reports, feedback form, camper awards and other needed paperwork with the assistance of other staff as needed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Know when to ask for assistance and support fellow staff.
