What Will You Do?

As a Performance/Policy Evaluator (Auditor Evaluator I), you will develop recommendations to solve California's toughest problems. Performance/Policy Evaluators must quickly understand and analyze complex processes, think creatively about effective solutions, write reports for the Legislature and the public, and participate in the development of presentations for the Legislature.

Specifically, you will:

• Communicate extensively with government officials and colleagues in a collaborative environment to obtain necessary information and to convey information related to audit procedures, findings, and recommendations.
• Understand laws and best practices to develop the criteria against which the audited agency will be held accountable.
• Collect and analyze evidence to convey strong, compelling arguments that are responsive to the audit objectives and comply with government auditing standards.
• Track, interpret and analyze data using various analytical techniques to evaluate agency performance against relevant criteria.
• Thoroughly and accurately document your analyses to support audit findings and recommendations.
• Work with teams to develop final public reports.

How Do I Join?

The California State Auditor is part of the merit-based California civil service selection system. To complete this process, you must do the following:

• Create a profile on our website www.auditor.ca.gov/application/
• Upload your resume and take our exam by April 28 at 12:00pm.
• Log into your profile, get your results, and enter the hiring process by April 30 at 11:59pm.
• If your exam score is high enough, we will contact you with the next steps of the hiring process.

Current or former state employees with transfer eligibility may submit their application through their CalCareer account at www.calcareers.ca.gov. If you are not a state employee, or your state classification is not eligible to transfer, you must take the exam to be considered for the position. To take the exam, create a profile and upload your resume on our website www.auditor.ca.gov/application/ to apply. Failure to submit the required documentation may result in disqualification from the hiring process.

What is the Hiring Timeline?

There are multiple steps to the hiring process including an exam and multiple interviews. The general steps in the hiring process are as follows:

• You will receive an invitation to complete a pre-recorded video interview within two weeks of applying if your exam score is high enough. You will have ten calendar days to complete your pre-recorded video interview.
• You will be notified in late-May, after the final filing date, if you are moving forward in the hiring process out of fairness to all applicants.
• You will participate in an in-person interview in June and be notified if you are moving forward within two to three weeks of your in-person interview.
• You will join our team in August or early September 2024.

* Salary Range A: $67,440 - $81,744 or Salary Range B: $73,188 - $96,240

This position is eligible for participation in the office's hybrid telework program. Work at the alternate work location must be conducted in a space that is ergonomically sound, private, distraction-free, and has safe working conditions to be eligible to telework.
