Job Description: Unpaid Training

Tunnel Vision Sports is currently hiring for a Sports Editor. This is an unpaid job training opportunity. However, we will provide you with opportunities to help you gain the experience that is necessary to move forward in your career.

An ideal candidate for this training has the following traits and qualities:

  • Is actively engaged with, and has a strong understanding of, the sports community.
  • Responds to newsworthy events and prioritize timeliness.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of journalist ethics and its application to sports journalism
  • Prioritizes teamwork to maintain an inclusive and professional culture.

Main Responsibilities: Helps to manage fine details of content production.

  • Keeps reporters accountable for content production in collaboration with the desk director
  • through the implemented feedback system and through direct communication.
  • Helps to plan an appropriate amount of content for the week.
  • set reporters up for success in order to accomplish a strong digital presence.
  • Communicates frequently with managing editors about problems that could disrupt production.
  • Edits one-on-one with reporters or provides feedback remotely on Zoom or by phone.
  • Sports Specific Responsibilities:
  • Helps to communicate professionally with prominent members of the University’s Athletic Department in order to build trust within the community.
  • Possesses a strong grasp of the AP style sections relevant to sports.
  • Helps to coach sports-specific skills in reporters.
  • Writes frequently for the desk, and helps with the production of special editions.

Required Skills:

• Solid research skills

• Desire to learn fast, self-motivated, and organized

• Experience in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint

• Understanding of File-Sharing Platforms (Google-Drive, Dropbox)

• Time management and planning skills

• Strong Communication (understanding & explaining business logic and technical concepts)

• English language skills

Other needs:

• High-speed internet

• Personal Computer, that can be used for work (either Mac OS, or Windows OS)

Hours

This position will allow flexibility for students the weekly requirement will be 10 hours minimum and 15 hours maximum.

Length

This training will have a three-month minimum requirement with an option for an extension if you choose.
