Position Summary:

The Gaylord Cooper Standard facility is looking to offer a HSE Internship. The Health, Safety & Environmental Intern will report to the onsite HSE manager. The intent of the HSE Internship is to provide an experience where the candidate is introduced to the automotive manufacturing industry and offered progressive opportunities to administer HSE management systems.  The HSE Intern will observe and assist the HSE Manager in the administration, development, and implementation of HSE programs, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the subject matter expert for HSE legal requirements and recommend to the plant manager and other direct staff related best practices, tools, processes, and initiatives.
  • Partner with operations to ensure job hazard & risk assessments (JHRA) are conducted for both routine and non-routine work and monitors that identified hazards are managed by operations.
  • Assist with assessments to determine legal and company standards gaps and improvement needs for HSE.
  • Provides technical training materials for occupational health, safety and environmental topics and ensures that regulatory-required training is conducted and documented.
  • Assists with the maintenance of plant procedures, standards, and guidelines for HSE topics and works with plant staff to ensure that roles and responsibilities are understood and accepted.
  • Develop plant-wide competency in incident investigation and participate in cross-functional (operations, maintenance, engineering, etc.) investigation teams.
  • Participates in the reviews and approval of plant capital projects for HSE considerations; prepares the budget and justification for HSE-related capital investments.
  • Assists the maintenance of plant HSE management systems and documentation (environmental management, safety & health management, energy management) and serves as the coordinator for implementation and compliance.
  • Participates in Continuous Improvement events.
  • Participate in the New Material Approval Process / SDS Management System.
  • Participate in the HSE review and sign off for new equipment/projects/programs.
  • Works with regional HSE team and local HR team to continuously develop HSE knowledge, skills and capabilities for both self and the local organization.
  • Serves as a role model for safe personal practices.
  • Assist the local champion for regional or global HSE initiatives.
  • May, on occasion, be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description.
  • Participate in ISO 14001 and 45001 internal audits.
  • Participate in external health, safety & environmental compliance audits.
  • Participates on the team responsible for creating, reviewing, and revising Job Hazard Risk Assessments.
  • Participates on the team responsible for completing aspect and impact Assessments.
  • Participate in workplace incident investigations.
  • Completes waste assessments.
  • Administer HSE committee activities.
  • Participate in the administration of workers compensation claims management.
  • Participate in the administration of the hearing conservation program.
  • Participate in the administration of the lockout tagout program.
  • Participate in the administration of ergonomic assessments.
  • Participate in related training (arc flash NFPA 70 E, First Aid/CPR/AED, DOT).
  • Participate in Emergency Action Planning.
  • Participate in Machine Guarding assessments.
  • Participate in the administration of contractor management.
  • Participate in the new hire HSE orientation process.
  • Participate in document control reviews and approvals. 
  • Participate in preparation and submittal of the HSE annual budget.

Education and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Currently pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management, Environmental Health and Safety, or other safety related degree.
  • Basic knowledge of safety standards such as MIOSHA, OSHA, EPA, DOT standards.
  • Interest with ISO14001 / 45001 management systems.
  • Good interpersonal skills and can relate well to all organizational functions and levels.
  • Fluent in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to participate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Solid leadership, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Work Environment/Work Conditions:

  • Manufacturing Office Environment.
  • Business casual dress code.
  • Must wear proper personal protection equipment while on manufacturing floor. (Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, High Visibility Vest, Safety Toe Footwear).
