About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI):

The Indiana Department of Insurance protects Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm.  The IDOI also monitors the financial solvency of insurance companies in Indiana so that legal promises in insurance policies are honored.
 

About Summer Internships:

The summer internship program provides participants the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as well as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experience.  Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities.  The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort activities on a weekly basis designed to enable:

  • Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
  • Exposure to many facets of state government
  • Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort

 

Salary:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those who have an earned bachelor’s degree.
 

Internship Overview:

The legal intern will provide support to the IDOI Legal Division, including General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and IDOI Staff Attorneys.  You will assist with various projects and provide general litigation and administrative support. 

 

Principal duties may include:

  • Perform legal research
  • Receive, open, screen, and distribute Legal Division mail
  • Assist in the drafting of documents and correspondence
  • Identify, collect, and prepare evidentiary materials, at the direction of the IDOI attorneys
  • Assist with requests for public records requests
  • Work with IDOI divisions on projects such as investigation of enforcement cases, reviewing insurance product filings, etc.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the General Counsel or other Legal Division attorneys.

 

We are accepting students who are currently enrolled in law school or undergraduate students who are studying insurance, paralegal, or any major that prepares them for law school.
 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
