Legal Assistant I

The Saint Paul City Attorney's Office currently has two vacancies for the position of Legal Assistant I. One position in the Criminal Division and one position in the Civil Division. A Legal Assistant I performs entry level professional work providing legal assistant services, of limited complexity and variety, as requested/assigned. Anticipated starting salary for this position is at the base rate for this job title.
 
Primary Responsibilities: 
 

  • Prepares and organizes case files for hearings, conferences, and trials.
  • Assists assigned attorneys by gathering documentary evidence and relevant information and ensuring that documentation is complete, accurate, and relevant to the file/case. For criminal matters this includes all discovery requests for assigned attorneys in a timely manner, including medical records, police reports, criminal histories, interview and 911 recordings, Body Worn Camera Videos, In Car Camera videos, photos, certified convictions and other evidentiary materials to ensure the materials area ready for court proceedings.
  • Processes, prepares and/or drafts various legal forms and documents such as general correspondence, initial violation letters, council resolutions and packets of information.
  • Coordinates, reviews, and indexes data and documentation produced and received in response to discovery in civil matters and/or data requests.
  • Assists in trial preparation, prepares exhibits and materials, locates and makes arrangements for victims/witnesses to testify at trial, explains court room procedures to victims/witnesses, takes notes of the proceeding, and provides feedback to the attorney.
  • Coordinates and provides police, medical personnel, and other professional witnesses with current case developments/required appearances.
  • Serves as a link between the attorneys and clients and/or witnesses by providing information about court proceedings and process, helping them prepare for court, attending court proceedings, and assisting with preparation of restitution requests and victim impact statements.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

 Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree
  • Paralegal Certification from an accredited program

Continued employment as a Legal Assistant I is contingent upon maintaining the Paralegal Certification.
