Police Officer Minimum Requirements:

Legally authorized to work in the United States
Valid Illinois driver’s license with a good driving history
Must be 21-35 years of age unless exempt under 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6
Education - High school education or GED and have completed 60 credit hours or an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university; or credit hours may be waived if the applicant has served at least two years of active military service. Proof of active military service will be required, as well as proof of an honorable discharge if the applicant is separated from the military.
No criminal record
Must have excellent moral character
Vision correctable to 20/20
FOID Card eligible at time of hire
Applicants must hold a valid POWER Card issued within 12 months prior to application deadline. POWER Cards are considered valid if dated 5/2/2023 – 5/2/2024. Contact NIPSTA, Triton College or Joliet Jr. College for additional information on obtaining a POWER card.

Virtual Testing Information:

Your exam will be offered electronically, and you will take the exam in your own home. There will be multiple sessions offered and each will be proctored virtually. Testing will be offered during business hours within the week of June 3rd - it is your responsibility to ensure you have the flexibility to test during these times.

In late May, you will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule and prepare for the exam. Please read through the instructions carefully before your exam date. Failure to follow the steps outlined may cause the electronic exam to not work properly, potentially resulting in your removal from the testing session.

Hiring Process:

The hiring process will consist of:

Written Examination
Oral Examination
Psychological Test
Polygraph Test
Background Investigation
Medical Examination

All applicants must pass all elements of the hiring process to be eligible for employment. Any person failing or not completing any portion of the hiring process will not be permitted to retest or reapply. The final eligibility list is schedule to be prepared within 120 days of the written test.

Appointees serve an eighteen-month probationary period.

The Village of Lake Bluff was incorporated in 1895. The Village has a population of 5,706 and is 4 square miles. The Village is primarily comprised of single-family residential neighborhoods, small retail shops, and small industrial parks. Lake Bluff is approximately 35 miles north of Chicago.

The Lake Bluff Police Department is a progressive, small municipal agency with fifteen (15) sworn Officers. The Department is internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Lake Bluff Police Department provides a variety of law enforcement services. The everyday operations of the Police Department include patrol, traffic, investigations, and community services. The Police Department is in a contemporary Public Safety facility with state-of-the-art equipment.
