Reactor/Fueling Engineering Summer Internship 2025

Naval Nuclear Laboratory has internship opportunities for college students to spend the summer of 2025 getting great work experience, in great locations, supporting the world's greatest Navy.

We are looking to hire Reactor/Fueling Engineering interns for the summer of 2025! NNL Summer Technical Internships offer an immersive professional experience in your field of study.  As an intern in NNL’s Reactor/Fueling engineering community, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge of engineering with support and mentorship from real-world experts in one or more of the following areas in support of the naval nuclear reactor lifecycle:

  • Methods: nuclear and cross-discipline (i.e., nuclear, thermal, and integrated plant) tools and methods development for use in design and analysis applications,
  • Design:
    • Model development and reactor design using state-of-the art Monte Carlo, deterministic transport, and/or diffusion theory solvers
    • Analysis of two-phase flow to predict critical heat flux mechanisms in reactor coolant channels and peak fuel temperature for a variety of conditions
  • Manufacturing: Analysis support for product manufacturing,
  • Fleet support: fleet data tracking and direct support of the operating fleet.

Program highlights include:

  • Introduction to Naval Nuclear Propulsion design, analysis, and fleet support
  • Partnership with a mentor and engineering community
  • Opportunity to tour local NNL site facilities
  • Trip to a Naval Shipyard for a guided tour
  • Final presentation to management, peers, and other NNL employees
  • Extensive networking opportunities

The NNL Internship is an approximate 10-12 week program starting in May/June 2025.

An internship position may result in a return internship or full-time employment offer upon successful completion of the program.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Candidates for Reactor/Fueling Engineering internship positions must be:

  • Pursuing Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related BS, MS, or PhD degrees from an accredited college or university
  • Must have completed at least first full year of college by May 2025
  • Enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout this internship

Students must attach most recent unofficial college transcripts and resume to the employment application.

Preferred Skills

  • Cumulative minimum GPA 3.0/4.0

  • Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience
  • Familiarity with project planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge in applied nuclear physics, design, and/or reactor analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming and scripting, diffusion theory, deterministic transport, and/or Monte Carlo methods.
