Trail Bridges Condition Survey Intern

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Position Description:
This trail bridges condition survey and assessment position will serve in the Juneau Ranger District of the Tongass National Forest. The placement will conduct trail bridge condition surveys on National Forest system trails. Service will be performed in coordination with Forest Service staff, an SCA lead trails assessment intern, another trail bridge assessment intern, and a trails assessment intern. The group of four SCA interns will perform duties as a group or in pairs, often in the field and not under direct supervision of Forest Service staff.

This placement will receive adequate training from the Forest Service to be able to perform the survey and assessments and become certified to assess trails bridge structures.

Some trail work (maintenance and/or building) will be a component of expected project tasks. This placement will receive adequate training and guidance for any trail work duties.

Member Benefits:

  • $1,500 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $425 - weekly living allowance
  • $700 - monthly housing stipend (4 months) for Forest Service bunkhouse
    • Forest Service bunkhouses are located immediately adjacent to the district offices. Housing consists of fully-furnished 2-bedroom/2-bathroom apartments with a set of twin beds in each room. Up to four residents per apartment share a kitchen, dining room, and common area. The facility also comes with internet services, laundry, and recycling. Basic services such as heat, electricity, and water are built into the monthly cost. There is a required check-in/check-out procedure along with a bunkhouse agreement.
  • $200 - one time PPE/boot allowance
  • Not eligible for AmeriCorps
  • Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) Hiring Authority

Member Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be physically fit, able to hike long distances on uneven terrain in inclement weather, be able to operate a mobile application, and be comfortable in brown bear country.
  • Driver's license required
