Job Summary:

 

The Athletics Department is seeking an Executive Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Operating Officer. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE),12-month, professional faculty position.

 

The mission of the OSU Department of Athletics is to Go Build Excellent, Authentic, Visionary Student-Athletes (GO B.E.A.V.S.).

 

The Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Operating Officer serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, providing leadership in various capacities and in the execution of the department's stated goals, as well as specific and defined authority in the absence of the Vice President & Director of Athletics.

 

The Deputy AD/COO serves as the lead of the internal operations unit, providing leadership, planning and supervision in the areas of Capital Projects, Facility Operations, Compliance, Diversity initiatives, student athlete development and Event Management. This includes providing leadership and direction in the development and execution of the department's facility master plan and assisting with fundraising initiatives relevant to certain special projects. The Deputy AD/COO serves as a liaison between Athletics and several internal and external groups, including University Capital Planning and Development, Concessions/Performance Table, Academic Technologies, Academics, the Department of Public Safety, Local Law Enforcement agencies and other campus entities, outside contractors, and special interest groups. The Deputy AD/COO acts on behalf of the Athletic Director on Admissions Committees.

 

This position also provides leadership within the sport supervisor team, with sport supervision responsibilities specific over flagship sports based on background and experience, and any other flagship sports based on background and experience. A member of the executive team, the Deputy AD/COO also provides leadership in the development and execution of the department's strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

 

35% STRATEGIC PLANNING AND STUDENT ATHLETE SERVICES

As part of the Executive Team reporting to the Athletic Director, this position provides strategic vision and leadership for the department. This position will also be responsible for leading the development and execution of the department’s strategic plan. Represents the Athletic Director at assigned appropriate academic meetings (Admissions meetings; other assigned campus committees). Takes lead role on new NCAA initiatives such as NIL and Alston.

 

30% SUPERVISION & LEADERSHIP

Provides leadership in various capacities and in the execution of the department’s stated goals, as well as specific and defined authority in the absence of the Vice President/Director of Athletics. Provides leadership within the internal operations unit, the sport supervisor team and sport supervision responsibilities. In addition, serves as a liaison to the Director of Concessions Operations. Plans, assigns, and delegates lead work to employees. Approves work and disciplines or rewards accordingly. Responds to grievances and is responsible for all hires and dismissals in respective unit(s). Prepares and signs performance reviews. Creates, executes, and maintains the strategic plan for the Building Beavs Leadership program and all its initiatives. Position provides leadership and supervision to the multiple flagship sports.

 

10% CAPITAL PROJECTS

Responsible for creating and maintaining Athletic Department Facility Masterplan for capital projects. Chairs or provides direction for all facility projects including responsibility for assisting the Athletic Director and campus leadership in fundraising activities and developing appropriate funding models and managing the budgets of each project.


 

10% ACADEMICS

Provides leadership in the area of Athletics Academics Acting as the liaison to Academic Services to provide input regarding the staffing, infrastructure and protocols; provides ongoing evaluative feed back to the department as the unit evolves.

 

10% COMPLIANCE OPERATIONS/NIL PROGRAM

Provides leadership in the area of compliance and oversees the Assoc AD for Compliance. The compliance office educates, informs, and interprets all issues associated with NCAA and P12 rules compliance. Provides leadership on the evaluation of the University’s efforts to maintain institutional control of the athletic program. This position also provides oversight and leadership in the development of policies and procedures as it relates to NIL.

 

5% BUDGET OVERSIGHT

This position has responsibility for the entire Internal Unit’s budget. This responsibility includes development, independent decision-making regarding allocations, and the ability to develop discretionary actions in alternative use of resources. The position is responsible for the annual evaluation of all budgets and to report trends and identify and implement fiscally responsible systems for each reporting unit. Assigned sport supervision budget responsibility.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Master’s degree.

• Five (5) years of experience working in collegiate athletic administration.

• Senior Management experience (Athletic Director/Sr. Assoc/Deputy Director level only).

• Supervisory experience.

• Experience in Capital Projects at an NCAA Division I institution.

• A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
