Supervisory Accounting Technician (GS-7/8)

Summary

Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) mission is to lead the DoD in finance and accounting by ensuring the delivery of efficient, exceptional quality pay and financial information.

Position Location(s):

  • These are NOT remote positions.
  • Everyone selected for this position will have to reside in the commuting of DFAS-Limestone, ME

Duties

  • Supervises and directs functions in support of accounting transactions related to contract payments, personal services payment, and material transactions for goods and services for the organization.
  • Oversees subordinate Accounting Technicians, or through subordinate Lead Accounting Technicians, oversees the accomplishment of technical work in accordance with policy, directives, regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Interprets regulations, requirements, and policies, including changes, updates, and automated systems modifications, to ensure compliance.
  • Trains and assists lower level accounting technicians with techniques to correct and process accounting inputs.
  • Plans and schedules work to be accomplished; sets and adjusts short-term priorities for completion of work.
  • Positions filled at less than the full performance level will be developmental in nature.

Qualifications

 

Human Resources will determine your qualifications for each entry grade level based on your interest and the additional following criteria. Resumes for federal government positions need more detailed work descriptions and accomplishments than a typical private sector resume. Please be sure to clearly describe the full scope of your work experiences in your resume. Combinations of education and experience may also be sufficient.

GS-07

  • To qualify for the GS-07 level of this position applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-06) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized Experience Is Defined As:

  • Maintaining accounting or financial ledgers, posting financial transactions, preparing accounting reports, reconciling accounts, and working with a variety of accounting and financial automated systems.

GS-08

  • To qualify for the GS-08 level of this position applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-07) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized Experience Is Defined As:

  • Processing and auditing complex contracts and vendor pay entitlement transactions, reconciling pay system and financial system data and working with a variety of electronic systems to review and resolve pay transaction issues.

Volunteer Experience:

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

 

Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience is generally not applicable above GS-05, but may be considered if it is directly related to the position being filled.

GS-07:

  • One year of graduate education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement when it is directly related to the position being filled

GS-07 SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

  • One full year of graduate level education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position being filled. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. If you are using education to substitute for the specialized experience, you must submit transcripts at the time you apply. To be creditable, education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html).

GS-08:

  • Eighteen months of graduate education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement when it is directly related to the position being filled.

GS-08 SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

  • Eighteen months of graduate level education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position being filled. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. If you are using education to substitute for the specialized experience, you must submit transcripts at the time you apply. Official Transcripts: If the position you are applying for has a positive degree requirement or education forms the basis for qualifications (i.e. you would not qualify without the education obtained), you MUST submit transcripts with your application.

  • FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying or prior to appointment as outlined above.
    • Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation upon request. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.
