Accountant (Degreed)

The purpose of this class within the organization is to ensure the timely and accurate processing of financial transactions in accordance with accounting principles.

Essential Functions

Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
Prepares and reviews documents of original entry into the accounting cycle. Assists in all areas of Finance Department, including, but not limited to, receivables, purchasing, payables and fixed assets. Submits monthly financial data thru journal entries, bank reconciliations, account analysis, receipt/reconciliation of funds. Analyzes general and subsidiary ledgers in the accounting system, making adjustments and corrections as needed.
Uses a variety of possible software, including but not limited to customer billing, fixed assets, inventory, and general ledger. Effectively operates a computer and utilizes strong skills in Microsoft Word and Excel to assist in budget preparation and other projects as assigned. Working in a variety of specialized software packages to assist with tax collection and processing of general ledger transactions.
Communicates effectively, orally and in writing, with the public, elected officials, department heads, and other City employees. Performs job responsibilities independently and in a timely manner as to meet scheduled deadlines. Accurately communicates information to assigned supervisor in a timely and useful manner. Ability to supervise clerical employees engaged in accounting functions. Makes complex mathematical calculations in an efficient and accurate manner.
Ability to understand and apply a wide range of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to government enterprise fund fiscal operations. Manages all defined functions in areas as assigned by the Director of Finance. Collects payments from the public for various taxes, licenses, and applications, verifying accuracy of payments and maintaining City records.
Works with internal and external customers to provide and obtain data and information. Prepares data for and works with external auditors and other government agencies. Prepares summaries, reports, and a variety of financial schedules. Prepares bank reconciliations.

Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands:

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field. Requires two (2) years as an accountant or closely related experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Municipal Finance Officer (CMFO) designation preferred, but not required. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Software. Must have the ability to be bonded.
