Job Summary

The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) invites applications for full-time research professional positions starting in July 2025. An interdisciplinary research and training center at the University of Chicago, EPIC is contributing innovative solutions to the global energy challenge: how can we ensure that people around the world, today and in the future, have access to the reliable, affordable energy needed for human development without putting our health, environment and climate at risk? Previous results from EPIC projects have been influential with policymakers worldwide and featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other leading publications.

Successful candidates will work under the direction of Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago. Responsibilities span all stages of research, including managing projects, collecting and analyzing data, creating presentations, and editing manuscripts. His research involves using experimental and quasi-experimental methods to study topics in energy and environmental economics. A few current research projects include implementing and evaluating the world’s first market for particulates in India, using machine learning to better target regulatory enforcement of natural gas production in Colorado, and estimating the effect of renewable portfolio standards across the United States.

The program is a “pre-doc” and is intended to serve as a bridge between college or a master’s program and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics. In the past three years, previous research professionals have gone on to pursue Economics PhDs at the following institutions: Berkeley (2), Duke Finance (1), MIT (1), UChicago (1), Yale (2).
