Projections Analyst

CBO’s Budget Analysis Division seeks an analyst to work in its Projections Unit, which develops, coordinates, and reports on CBO’s baseline budget projections and produces other documents, including cost estimates for proposed legislation. 

The following are among the projections analyst’s wide-ranging responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and use of budget databases;
  • Prepare and review material for CBO’s major recurring reports on the budget, the President’s annual budget request, and other topics; and
  • Respond to inquiries from the Congress and the public.

CBO’s analysts work closely with key Congressional staff members as the Congress prepares its annual budget plans, considers the President’s budget proposals, and evaluates the budgetary effects of legislation. Staff members often have significant involvement in budget and legislative processes.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a graduate degree in public policy, public administration, economics, or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree and at least four years’ experience working in budgeting or policy analysis. The position requires following:

  • Solid quantitative orientation, including expertise with Excel;
  • Superior communication skills, especially the ability to write about and explain complex material clearly and concisely;
  • Facility with handling multiple tasks simultaneously; and 
  • The ability to complete projects independently and under tight deadlines.

Experience with the federal budget process is desirable.
