This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this internship, you must be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the upcoming semester for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment (taking at least a "half time" course load). You will be required to provide documentation (transcript, enrollment certification, etc.) to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

This is a developmental position in FHWA - the position is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.

The Environmental Protection Specialist Pathways Student Intern will assist higher-graded staff in collecting, sorting, and organizing information for evaluating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and processes. You will

  • Attain knowledge in FHWA’s environmental policies and programs, including relevant laws, regulations, guidance, and procedures.
  • Support the development of analysis tools and models.
  • Support data analysis including analyzing output data from air quality and noise analysis tools and models to create graphs, tables, and maps to explain the patterns and trends.
  • Assist in conducting data and literature search, analyzing facts, and preparing reports.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working within a team environment in a hybrid work setting with staff in various offices and units around the country.

Additionally, the ideal candidate should have good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare written documents that may be ultimately viewable and understandable by the public.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working independently and demonstrate an eagerness to learn.

Experience with data analysis (such as R, Tableau, and Python) and mapping software (such as the Geographic Information System, GIS), as well as knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) are a "plus."
