Job Summary:

The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term, Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

This position will join a new DoD funded project in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS ) at Oregon State University (OSU ), working directly with the project’s principal investigators (PIs) at OSU (James Watson), Steven Johnson (Cornell University), Ethan Addicott (University of Exeter) and Sarah Glaser (WWF ). The incumbent will develop game theoretic analysis of national actors competing over shifting access to fisheries resources. They will also work on theory and empirical methods for advancing the application of Natural Capital Asset Price modeling of key fisheries as they undergo climate change driven spatial shifts. This work includes data wrangling and analysis, bioeconomic modeling, and the potential for machine learning.

Key Responsibilities

30% – Develop theory to describe changes in the strategic behavior of national actors certain fisheries case studies.

50% – Obtain and analyze fisheries, oceanographic, and conflict data, interpret results, and draw conclusions from results.

20% – Serve as author/co-author on peer-reviewed publications and give presentations at scientific meetings/conferences. Assist in preparation of reports for annual program review. Engage in open and respectful communication with research collaborators. Work with the supervisor to ensure research findings are available and accessible to the public.

What You Will Need

• Ph.D. in resource ecology, economics, political science, computer science, or a related discipline.
• Strong background in game theory, mathematical modeling, computational analysis and experience using and programing in python and/or R.
• Experience working with geospatial and economic datasets, machine learning, and mathematical models.
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication abilities, with the ability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for diverse audiences.
• Record of publication.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life experiences.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a research team with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
