Police Officer

Position Description

 

 

General police work in the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the prevention of crime.
 
Employees perform duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and in consonance with existing laws and ordinances.  Work is performed under the supervision of superior officers through assignment of duties, personal inspection, and review of reports.  While at all times recognizing the social aspects of police functions in dealing with the public, officers must be able to act quickly and exercise sound judgment and discretion in situations involving police powers without immediate supervision.  Police Officers are required to complete a probationary period of one year.
 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Patrols an assigned zone or district on foot, motorcycle, or in radio-dispatched cruiser; controls and regulates traffic; issues traffic warnings and summonses; and investigates traffic accidents and makes appropriate charges.  Investigates suspicious conditions, individuals, and incidents observed during patrol.  Makes arrests and accompanies prisoners to station for booking.  Responds to emergency situations such as fires, riots, and other disturbances to render assistance and maintain order.  Checks doors and windows of places of business and houses temporarily vacant; makes routine checks of bars and similar establishments.  Prepares reports on complaints, accidents, and other incidents investigated.  May serve as desk officer, receiving calls and insuring that officers investigate complaints.  May be assigned to investigative duty in plain clothes.  Testifies in court.  Gives information and assistance to the public.  May serve as a radio dispatcher or performs other police-related functions as assigned.
 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

 

High School graduation, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certificate.  Graduation from a certified Florida Police Academy with a certificate of completion, and (effective 7/1/93) successful completion of the State Certification Exam.  Must meet all FDLE requirements.
 
Must meet all of the selection standards listed above AND have at least ONE of the following qualifying education or life experiences:
 

  1. You have earned at least an Associates Degree from an accredited college or university; OR
  2. You have earned at least 60 semester hours of college credits from an accredited college or university. OR
  3. You have received an Honorable Discharge for active duty in one of the armed services, having successfully completed a regular enlistment of at least 3 years without early separation; OR
  4. You are currently certified as a Florida Law Enforcement in the State of Florida, having successfully completed two years of service - not counting academy attendance; OR
  5. You are currently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in another state, the military, or a federal law enforcement agency - meeting all requirements of a CJST Equivalency Of Training (EOT) review, including having successfully completed two years of employment as a full time law enforcement officer - not counting academy attendance.

 

 

Knowledge Skills Abilities

 

 

Knowledge of local geography.
Some knowledge of first aid.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms and in the operation of motor vehicles.
Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and record them clearly and completely.
Ability to learn the principles, practices, and procedures of police work.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relations with the public and enforce laws and ordinances tactfully, firmly, and impartially.
Ability to remain calm and react quickly in emergencies.
Ability to learn applicable laws and ordinances and departmental rules of conduct and procedures and work within their scope.
Ability to meet requirements of health, physical and/or mental condition as set up by the Police and Human Resources Departments.
