Benefits Consultant Intern

May - August 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the work environment and the people I got to meet.

What I wish was different

During my interviews I was told I would be in a different location closer to where I live, however, this changed and there were a few other things that were not clear about the internship and in the job description.

Advice

Go into it knowing what you are doing.

Insurance Agent

June - August 2023 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I loved how much I genuinely learned about sales and insurance from this role. I have never learned as much from a job as this one. The mentors were very hands-on and would help with anything you needed and genuinely made you part of the team and wanted to see you succeed. It was a hard work but easy to get the swing of and hard work that would pay off. I would definitely recommend this job to anyone interested in any branch of sales.

What I wish was different

The only hard thing was that the role was commission based. However, getting paid was based off of your hard-work which was rewarding. I only had the time to work for about two months and still made money which can be hard because it involves opening new accounts. While I would have loved to make some more money, if you are in a position where this is not of extremely high importance, it is a very rewarding and insightful working experience.

Advice

I would recommend learning how to become organized and make your own schedule. Most of my work days involved deciding what aspect of lead-generation I would devote my time to. Aflac is helpful with giving you an idea of how to sculpt your schedule, but it is on you to stay on top of it and push yourself to work hard every day.

Sales Intern

May - June 2022 • York, PA

What I liked

The people I worked with were nice but other than that, there was nothing I liked.

What I wish was different

I wish that I got paid and that the internship was structured. It was not even an internship, it was just using people who do not know any better to use their contacts. I just went around cold-calling different businesses and did not make any money from it. I ended up paying hundreds of dollars for getting the right certifications and on gas money, and I did not make a single cent.

Advice

I do not recommend this to students or anybody for that matter. You do not make any money and the people who were there for longer times as full-time workers had to work other part-time jobs on the weekends to make enough money to survive.

Sales Associate

May - August 2022 • Rolling Meadows, IL

What I liked

I liked the freedom the job offers as well as the fact that it is all commission based, which means it really is up to the individual how much they will make.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time to develop relationships with business owners. 3 months time was not enough to do this.

Advice

I would be prepared for a lot of rejection and struggles. The job is built for the people who will continue to work hard despite facing failure over and over.

Insurance Sales Agent

May - October 2022 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I liked how hands on the experience was. I really enjoyed first hand interacting with clients and learning the process of sales.

What I wish was different

I didn't love how heavily cold-calling based it was, I wish I did more prospecting in the field. I also wish there was more cold-calling training at the beginning as I had to do a lot of trial and error.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to push yourself out of your comfort zone because you can't grow staying in what feels comfortable.

Health and Benefits Consultant

May - August 2021 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility of the position and how it was up to me to make whatever commission I desired to make. I also enjoyed all of the guidance that I received during the position.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a position that was paid by the hour because I felt at certain times that I was wasting the days by not making any sales.

Advice

Don’t go into sales if you are easily deterred or if you cannot be your own boss.

Sales and marketing intern

June 2021 • Conshohocken, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the management at Aflac. There were plenty of district sales coordinators offering their help to the group of interns. I also liked the independence of this internship as each intern is treated more as their own independent agent rather than just an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish that this internship could’ve been longer or that there could have been more opportunities to win prizes. Selling insurance can be very difficult especially when first starting out. I think giving more opportunities and competitions to win prize money would be beneficial.

Advice

Stay diligent and continue to follow up on all of your contacts that you make.

Sales intern

May - July 2021 • North Liberty, IA

What I liked

Nothing

What I wish was different

I wish I was paid. I wish they provided leads. I wish they did more training. I wish they paid for our gas. I honestly wish I didn't do it because I don't think I took away anything valuable.

Advice

Don't do it unless you have parents to support you cause you won't make enough to care for yourself. Unless you really want to work for Aflac or your a kick butt salesperson as a college student, wouldn't recommend. The interns are literally just free labor.

Sales Intern

June - August 2021 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I liked learning about the sales industry and how marketing plays a role in it. I also learned a lot of good communication skills and how to really sell myself. I also learned a lot about employee benefits.

What I wish was different

The internship was unorganized. Many days we would sit in zooms for hours learning nothing. We also got a $1000 over the course of 3 months. The rest of the money earned was commission based. They set unrealistic sales goals and did not give proper sales training.

Advice

Do not get into sales if you want a steady income.

What I liked

Flexible Schedule, motivating pay structure. Enabled me to maintain relationships with local business owners and invest in my community. I also loved the supportive leadership and coaching I received.

What I wish was different

Not strictly commission. Chattanooga is a very saturated insurance market, and so it was difficult to find good prospects.

Advice

Don't do this job if you are only in it for the money.
