What I liked

I had the opportunity to do real, meaningful work as a member of one of the software teams for Kohl's.

Store Manager Intern

June - August 2019 • Alameda, CA

What I liked

Being in a new place and the bay area market allowed me to experience business on a whole other level. I learned a lot in the weeks of my internship not only about myself, but about managing teams, building connections, operations and supply chain management, marketing, and merchandising. I watched the lessons i was taught in class come to life, and it made me really value my education here at Chico State more.

What I wish was different

My store manager quit during my experience, so a lots of things were up in the air, and I lost the person I was supposed to work closest with. Some days I felt that i had to find things to do, or guide my own experience because no one else was.

Advice

Go to the career fair! Even if it is just practice for post graduate life. My hiring process for the internship was so smooth and was a direct result of offerings provided by the career center. Also, take yourself out of your comfort zone and try working in a new place or new field, you'll learn so much more that way.

Operations Associate

July 2019 • Ronkonkoma, NY

What I liked

The work environment is amazing. Everyone is friendly, and no one tries to make me feel isolated or left out. Moreover, everyone is willing to help others when in need, which wasn't present in a job I had previously.

What I wish was different

Some sections of the store are a bit unorganized, which made it difficult to find items.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. I have made many mistakes, and I've asked people for help countless of times, but it's important to learn what you don't understand, instead of sitting down and being confused. People are willing to help.

Kohl's Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Redlands, CA

What I liked

Being apart of Kohl's Management allowed me to fully understand what it is like to be apart of a team. There is more going on than simply what is on the sales floor. I was able to learn the aspects of business, why products aren't selling, how we can improve products to sell, and how to make a customers experience more rewarding. I was able to have a great internship experience because of the team at the Redlands Kohl's.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been longer. Two months of learning the operations of the store, understanding Kohl's policies, and getting to know your team was not enough time. I feel like I was just getting a hang of it when I had to leave.

Advice

Always ask questions. When you do not understand a concept, just ask! Everyone is there to help you be successful. Also, the two months flew by. Enjoy every second and don't be afraid to take risks. You learn by making mistakes, and that is how you improve.

Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Augusta, ME

What I liked

I loved getting my first hands-on management experience, it was a truly amazing opportunity that I wouldn't have had the chance to experience if it weren't for the job posting I saw on Handshake, and thanks to a member of the Radford Career Center that personally informed me about the position! The experience of the internship was priceless, and better yet, led to me being offered a full-time salaried position after graduation.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I loved all of it!

Advice

Search Handshake regularly for jobs, you would be surprised how often new jobs & internships appear! Also, don't hesitate to stop by the Career Center and check out some of their resources, I was able to get a suit from the career closet for my interview, and chatted with a staff member there who showed me how to use Handshake, and helped me find this internship. As for the internship itself: go into internships with the notion that it's not just a job, it's also an opportunity to learn and grow yourself.

Store Management I

June - July 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

The amount of autonomy we received as interns was fantastic. I was able to truly come into my own and find my leadership style independently while also being guided by upper management. It was definitely a nice balance.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to have been eased in a little bit more but the "sink or swim" standard did force me to adapt and figure things out for myself.

Advice

I would advise to not let small things get to you. You will probably fail at least once, but don't fret. You are SUPPOSED to fail sometimes, that's when you grow the most. You learn from your mistakes and take it in stride and you become better. Fail fast and fail forward. Let your mistakes guide you but not define you.

Advice

Patience is key. Bad experiences are good because you learn from them, especially when a customer is rude. It gives you a chance to be kind to those who need it the most.

Apparel Design Intern

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The job environment is extremely positive and welcoming. My team helped me to learn all of the skills I would need to enter into an assistant designer role at most corporate companies. Kohl's also took my design interests into consideration when placing me and the team I was placed on was the best fit for me.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply to positions, I applied through the Kohl's career website on a whim. Be confident when you're interviewing, but also be realistic. They want to hire people that are excited to work, and if you are fake in your interview you probably won't enjoy faking it for the whole ten week internship if you happen to get the position.

Production Intern

June - August 2023 • Menomonee Falls, WI

What I liked

I loved the community and positive work environment. They did a great job of making interns feel welcomed and valued, and gave us meaningful tasks.

What I wish was different

The living situation was not in an incredibly safe area and was a distance away from the headquarters.

Advice

Make as many connections with those above you as you can!

Sales Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Sarasota, FL

What I liked

I consistently learned so much each day throughout the entire 8 week period. They were able to locate me at a store within my hometown. The intern program included multiple field trip events and was well organized.

What I wish was different

The hours were inconsistent. I wish the internship was longer than 8 weeks. There was a lot of pressure on interns to accept manager-in-training positions post-internship.

Advice

Stay open-minded. Actively make efforts to connect with associates and managers. Take initiative in your learning. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Advice

Kohl's is a wonderful corporation to work for, and I would recommend anyone looking for a part-time job to apply there.

What I liked

I enjoy learning new things every day and learning to assist customers in the most efficient and effective ways possible. I enjoy building relationships with my coworkers and volunteering in nonprofit events through Kohls' Associates in Action program.

What I wish was different

I wish my schedule could be more consistent, as it can differ greatly week-to-week.

Advice

The current work can be stressful at times, just keep in mind that the skills and experience that you are gaining is extremely valuable to your future endeavors.

Kohls Executive Management Supervisor Intern

June - August 2018 • San Bernardino, CA

What I liked

I was treated and exposed to the same things as the Full-Time Supervisors. I was accepted by the entire building and felt like a part of the team from week 1 through week 10.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more time to dive into the more technical requirements that Supervisors have. I also wish I could have worked overtime on some days to leave my partners with more efficient nad thorough hand-offs.

Advice

Always take advantage of an opportunity to pick the brain of people in the field that you hope to enter. This internship allowed us to meet one on one with everyone in the warehouse. I learned a lot about management, career paths, and life from the various people I was able to speak with.
